Little girls love the stories about sisters (and boys too maybe! but I have no experience with that) and about having magical powers.
Frozen kinda speaks to both of those things directly, and while those themes are also somewhat present in Moana they don’t scratch the same itch.
That being said, I’ve yet to meet any kid that likes either one to dislike the other, even if they have a particular favorite.
I guess you're right, I'm looking at it too much with my "adult eyes". But yeah, when looking at it this way it's just ... bad, like really, from every angle - premise, plot, characters and their motivation, ... I have a really hard time to finish it when my daughters watch it.
And I know people say "it's just a Disney fairytale" but so is f.e. Tangled and it handled all those points perfectly. And yet the Frozen is the all-time-hit and not Tangled. But as you said, it's aimed at little girls and not grumpy old man like me :) And from that point it did a perfect job obviously.
PS Moana is just amazing and "You're welcome" is one of my most fovorite songs of all time! :)
