Isn’t this basically what they did with the Switch? It’s very low on gimmicks that never get used (infrared? Touchscreen?)

Well, the switch actually has a touchscreen, so not sure what point you're trying to make. Also, the joycons aren't as study as everyone thinks they are including the drifting issue that Nintendo loves to ignore.

Also Nintendo has nothing to do with the development of Pokémon - so while shit, they hardly deserve the blame for that.

Nintendo, Gamefreak, and Creatures Inc. are all co-owners of Pokemon, but Nintendo is the largest shareholder of the three, so yeah if Nintendo looks at the train-wreck launch of the Pokemon games and says little, then they do get the blame for it.
