A nice place to discuss rumors, happenings, innovations, and challenges in the technology sphere. We also welcome discussions on the intersections of technology and society. If it’s technological news or discussion of technology, it probably belongs here.

Remember the overriding ethos on Beehaw: Be(e) Nice. Each user you encounter here is a person, and should be treated with kindness (even if they’re wrong, or use a Linux distro you don’t like). Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

Google wouldn't be much below them for me I have to say.

I dunno. Google is just driven by greed, they are bad but at least they are predictably bad. Facebook feels more like they are genuinely evil, like they are actively trying to make the world worse.

Google is fairly bad, but a lot of that badness imo stems from them being so ubiquitous and controlling so much of the internet. If Meta, Amazon or TikTok were in that kind of position, I honestly think they would behave even worse.
