Take the same approach The Watchmen took. Make it a horrific villain. Giygas, SHODAN, Kefka...
Someone fully capable of ending humanity if left to their own devices. Either we, as in humanity as a whole, organize and unify as one people against a common enemy and fight them, or we all die. It solves a problem, either way.
Or would join it like Cartman and Cthulhu.
