Feel really guilty, my one family member gave me this. I don't use much google stuff anymore and I really dislike the company as it gets more intrusive. Is there anything I can do with this thing besides give it away? Nothing is worse than getting a gift that you can't use.

These are the first holidays since dad brought his girlfriend home (he’s 47, she’s 24). My brother and I live with him. At this year’s Christmas meal besides the usual guests, mom and girlfriend’s parents were also present. Definitely an unusual situation but it was a nice event cause everybody was levelheaded.

[Half Life 3 (HL3) doesn't count as we already know that game is still a long way off from coming out. Like another 5 or more years.]

A few more sub questions

Any good resources about collecting and preserving these?

If I find a number of obscure ones what’s the best way to scan them in bulk to preserve them

Are there any good tools to convert cursive to print text (I can read cursive but not as well as I’d like, and some of these are very fine cursive writings)

Any other tips I should know?

Thanks!

What FOSS projects are most in need of funding? I'd like to help if I can.

I'm also looking for projects only related to FOSS, or "in-the-spirit" of FOSS.

Since Lemmy is federated, and the admins of each instance choose what’s allowed and what’s not in their own instance.

How do you feel about what’s allowed and what’s not in your current instance ?

I’ll start: I’ve read people complaining about my instance admins, but I haven’t experienced nor seen anything I specifically disagree with.

And I’ve read things they wrote that I absolutely agree with, like not federating with Meta under any circumstances.

So for now, I’m happy with it. If I get banned randomly, I don’t think I’d go to a different instance, though. I’d probably just stop visiting Lemmy altogether.

Christmas feels different to me this year. Is it just me? How does today feel to you?

I'm talking people who could play multiple sports at a pro level like LeBron, MJ, Bo, Chef Curry

As a thinking experiment, let us consider that on the 1st of January of 2025 it is announced that an advance making possible growing any kind of animal tissue in laboratory conditions as been achieved and that it is possible to scale it in order to achieve industrial grade production level.

There is no limit on which animal tissues can be grown, so, any species is achieveable, only being needed a small cell sample from an animal to start production, and the cultivated tissues are safe for consumption.

There won't be any perceiveable price change to the end consummer, as the growing is a complex and labour intensive process, requiring specialized equipments and personnel.

Would you change to this new diet option?

In Venezuela the Christmas dish consists of Hallacas (like tamales but more elaborate); Ensalada de Gallina (with potatoes, carrots and diced apples with mayonnaise); Pernil de Cerdo and Pan de Jamón.

Venezuelan dish with Hallacas, Ham Bread, Pig Leg and Chicken Salad

The hallaca is the main part, and as such the tastiest and my favorite, both to eat it and to make it, which is not at all easy since it requires the help of the whole family.

I bought a bunch of eneloop pro, but using them in connected thermostats is always displaying "low battery" even after just fully charged. This is when I discovered that they are actually 1.2V

It really came as a surprise, is there a catch? Are they only good for low power stuff like remote controls?

Edit: it seems they do exist in lithium. Question remains why are the NiMH only 1.2v and why are they the most widespread?

Hello there, I am looking for a good-quality A4 leather book cover for my journal and would love some recommendations. Ideally, I would like something durable and suitable for daily use. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

Thx in advance.

Thought about it, snce it's near New Year's.

In my opinion, exercising/training/stretching atleast once a week would be a good thing for most people.

Seems like a terrible idea to me.

You make one mistake one time and bingo, you cost yourself a few grand to have it sanded, leveled, varnished, and polished.

Buying one through Apple online at the moment, but it’s roughly $1300 with taxes. So I have myself a little nervous at the cost. Thanks in advance for answering. 👍

How can they say you were doing something they never witnessed?

At 40, I am convinced that we cosplay as adult characters to hide our inner child, mostly from ourselves. Some seem to allow the stresses of life and responsibilities to make the mask indistinguishable, but I doubt any truly make it real. Do you wear the mask of age over the eyes of your inner child? Does age hold a meaningful value to you beyond the comradery of shared experience?
