A free software to take back control of your videos

Peertube is an open, federated alternative to Youtube without advertising or tracking. On this site, you can find a good Peertube instance, with good rules, good moderation and most importantly a friendly community.

When I use peertube, I interact in limited ways. I dont like, I dont subscribe. And Im not commenting. I usually only watch. I also find it slightly inaccessible.

And that's not because I don't want to interact.

Rather, it is because I don't think there are convenient and meaningful ways to do so as of now. On the one side, if you use your peertube account to interact with content from the site itself, it will work well. However content abroad is inconvenient and requires insight. For example it requires several clicks and typing in your federated account to interact with a video.

Secondly, it isn't attractive for passerbys to create an peertube account, because the software is primarily targeted toward video creators, and not the spectators.

Thirdly, it will increase the responsibilities of admins and moderators. Not only would they have to keep track of videos following terms, but also that users are interacting well.

I believe Peertube should outsource interaction and subscription to a new federated software. Let's call it Duckling just for the sake of making it easier to reference. Duckling is somewhat of an interaction service. Here you can subscribe to channels and instances, renamed to idols and pubs respectively, just to make it more human.

If you find a joyful instance, you can add it to your pubs. Pubs should be visited to find new idols.

One of the reason I find this idea quite interesting is because it would decompose peertube into smaller and more meaningful projects. Peertube could focus on making the best video hosting service, whereas Duckling could focus on becoming the best spectator service. For example, Duckling could experiment with how to display threads and sort comments. Or make it easier to discover relevant content.

As the development progress of such software, it could be meaningful to expand the scope of Duckling. Perhaps to make it more of a general purpose federated subscription service.

He just closed this issue in favor of nutomic's issue which is the basically the same issue

The Dutch national museum of "Beeld en Geluid" is experimenting with a Peertube instance where they archive their extensive collection of historic video content related to the Netherlands.

It is very encouraging to see this development, and I hope they'll take this initiative further than just an experiment. Their old image archive server is 'dying' and this effort is part of investigating alternatives.

Here's the Museum website: https://www.beeldengeluid.nl/en

And the Peertube instance: https://peertube.beeldengeluid.nl/

The linked URL to this post is to my toot about this. Please boost if you like this development. The more people use the instance, the more these institutions realize that Peertube and the Fediverse is a viable and attractive choice to just choosing YouTube, the advertising and targeting nightmare of Advertising giant Google.

Most of them in German language, two examples:

https://offenes.tv/

https://kraut.zone/

but English as well:

https://vids.sayit.world/

The density is shocking, considering that many of the normal instances are badly connected to other servers.

Magdesign has uploaded a series of Blender video tutorials to PeerTube.

Because default peertube doesn't have this feature and nutomic requested it in 2019.

I don't understand how they lay out their other channel, but there is also some other stuff.

it says so in the banner.

How much bandwidth it saves, what the load is on the server at different simultaneous viewers. A graph about the bandwidth in/out at different viewers would be most interesting.

I know libtorrent added webtorrent support a while back, how does it work? I tried it in qBittorrent and Transmission, and it downloads from the webseed only

I'm a new peertuber (literally created the channel yesterday) and being on the fediverse for a good time made me think It's a bit more harder to be discovered. It's not just that I want to become internet famous, but also because a whole lot of content here is generally really bad. (I'm not talking about the shitposts, the info coming from videos are boring as hell, the thumbnails and titles meh.)

I love the fediverse, It's tough to say but the videos here is quote-on-quote, really boring.

I'm not about to recreate the same mistakes, peertube could be something more than this.

unrelated: One thing I noticed is that youtubers do alot of collabs, and that's probably why some youtubers get discovered quickly, in general generates alot of traction. However there isn't really a center place to find other creators on peertube.

If there is any advice please don't hesitate to tell me anything, and let's discuss this for a bit, shall we?

Thanks in advance..

When I try to subscribe with a remote account (I am on peertube.social) I get this error:

Cannot fetch information of this remote account

Is there a fix to that, or some other way to subscribe?

In 2018, a platform was launched to build an open, decentralized web for videos. In 2021, the network is still struggling to grow. I take a look into some of the problems with content discovery, along with some small suggestions for instance admins.

There is another Chinese one like this on the channel. It is NSFW. This is weird enough. The other one is overkill

My download speed for a bunch of peertube vids are quite horrible and i cant stream some peertube vids without interruption

I know that I recently linked to an earlier video of the Gentle Living Shop, an ethical creative channel, but they just published a video where they announce that from now on they'll publish on PeerTube alone and stop publishing on YouTube because of it's unethical behavior. PeerTube surely needs quality content creators that publish exclusively on the PeerTube network.

this is a bot that will use gopass or pass for your credentials or any other CLI password manager or keystore then it will log into mastodon, and pull the latest feed item from odysee, peertube or any other place but is meant for videos. after this it will ramdonly pick one feed item, format it into a mastodon toot, and post(toot) it using the account credentials you supplied.

A came across this relatively new video channel on PeerTube with good tutorials on soap making, sewing and even some tech videos. It's worth to note that all content on the channel is released into the public domain (CC0)
