Comet ATLAS Before Sunrise

Comet ATLAS is really bright now, but also really close to the Sun. Outside the glow of the Sun, Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) would be one of the more remarkable comet sights of recent years, reflecting about as much sunlight to Earth as Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS did in October, and now rivaling even planet Venus. But the giant snowball is now so close to the Sun that it can only be seen through the light of the early morning dawn or the early evening dusk. Today, Comet ATLAS is at perihelion -- its closest ever to the Sun.

Ed Miliband is facing demands to introduce new measures to stop Britain using solar panels made by the Uighurs, an oppressed Muslim minority in western China, as part of his race towards net zero.

A cross-party group of peers has called for the energy secretary to introduce safeguards that prevent UK renewable energy companies from importing Chinese components made by slave labour.

It comes as the House of Lords debates Labour’s flagship legislation to establish Great British Energy, a publicly-owned company that will help deliver the government’s green transition.

Senior parliamentarians are concerned about the supply chains of renewable energy companies, many of which rely on products from China. In particular, there are questions around solar panels, which often contain polysilicon. Nearly half of the world’s solar-grade polysilicon is produced in the Xinjiang region of China where more than 2.6 million people, mostly from the Uighur ethnic group, have been subjected to forced labour in detention camps.

Academics, politicians and human rights groups have long warned that forced labour is rife there, including in the sourcing of polysilicon, with 11 companies in the region identified as being engaged in forced labour transfers.

[...]

To prevent UK energy supply chains being tainted by forced labour, a group of peers has now tabled an amendment to the bill, which, if approved, would prevent any public funds being given to companies involved with GB Energy where there is “credible evidence of modern slavery in the supply chain”.

[...]

Luke de Pulford, the executive director of Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, said: “Labour has gone from an admirably strong position on the persecution of Uighurs to energy policies which facilitate it. It’s an absolute 180 in policy terms. Now the chancellor is in Beijing meeting with China’s génocidaires.

Whatever the economic imperative, the consciences of politicians across both Houses should not permit the rush to net zero to be achieved on the back of Uighur slavery.

I have five.

The Youtube channels I would recommend are the following:

Tech/Science

S3 - The stories of people working to change the world.

Modern Day Eratosthenes - A great STEM communicator who provides a moderate level breakdown of STEM topics. Videos are less than 12 minutes long.

Ziroth - This channel focuses on highlighting new science and engineering projects that are helping the world transition to a zero carbon future!

Speculative Science

Isaac Arthur - This channel focuses on exploring concepts in science with an emphasis on futurism and space exploration, along with a healthy dose of science fiction. While we explore many concepts and technologies that are far beyond us now, we try to keep everything inside the bounds of known science or major theories.

Analytical Tech News/Stories

TechAltar - Analytical videos about tech companies [and their products or services].

Tech Business/Economics/History Video Essays

Asianometry - One of my favorite YT channels. He does a great job producing high quality videos about tech history, tech related economics, and sometimes dives into what that latest tech is and how it might play a part in our future.

Humorous Business Journalism

Good Work - "Edge-cutting" business journalism, with a healthy dose of humor mixed in. Actually covers things that you might want to know more about in the realm of business, trading, and why the American economy is so freaking weird.

The Making of a Movie/TV Show

It Was A Sh*t Show - Making stuff is hard, especially in the entertainment world when there are millions of dollars on the line. And we are going to talk about these disastrous, never ending, and sometimes dangerous productions. With video documentaries and a companion conversational podcast, It Was A Sh*t Show is an entertaining look at some of your favorite films and tv shows, and why they were such a nightmare to make.

Frame Voyager - Mini-documentaries on films without the clickbait negativity.

Mini/Full Documentary Makers

Peter Dibble - Obscure history from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. I recommend checking out America's First Cross-Country Auto Race.

Kirby Ferguson - He's best known for his documentary series called, Everything is a Remix. He made an updated and extended version of it. I recommend it.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security stated in a recent interview that the EU is ready to take over support for Ukraine if the US cannot continue its assistance. She emphasised that no US leader wants Russia to become a dominant global power.

In her discussion with Le Monde and AFP, Kallas addressed Elon Musk’s controversial posts on his platform, X, and highlighted the need to separate his personal opinions from the company’s actions, warning that non-compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) could have consequences.

When asked about Donald Trump’s comments on Greenland potentially joining the U.S., Kallas acknowledged the Arctic’s strategic importance while reaffirming respect for Denmark’s sovereignty. She agreed with Trump’s call for EU countries to increase defence spending and underscored that aiding Ukraine is vital for both European and global security.

Kallas warned that if Russia wins the war, it may embolden other nations with imperial ambitions, particularly China, reinforcing the need for US opposition to Russia.

...the RX 9070 XT performs decently well, trading blows with the RTX 4070 Ti Super. In NVIDIA's favorite Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with ray tracing, the RX 9070 XT managed 26 FPS, neck and neck with the RTX 4070 Ti, whereas the RTX 4080 Super was well ahead with 32 FPS.

In 1080p, the RX 9070 XT managed 85 FPS, whereas the RTX 4070 Ti edged past with 2 more frames. The RTX 4080 Super, unsurprisingly, was well ahead once again with 101 FPS. The RX 9070 XT appears far from promising in rasterization performance, as revealed by Black Myth: Wukong. At 4K, the RX 9070 XT managed around 30 FPS, defeating the 4070 Ti Super which managed 28. And at 1080p, the RX 9070 XT raked in 97 FPS, coming shockingly close to the 4080 Super, which managed 99 FPS.
