I have a ZFS RAIDZ2 array made of 6x 2TB disks with power on hours between 40,000 and 70,000. This is used just for data storage of photos and videos, not OS drives. Part of me is a bit concerned at those hours considering they're a right old mix of desktop drives and old WD reds. I keep them on 24/7 so they're not too stressed in terms of power cycles bit they have in the past been through a few RAID5 rebuilds.

Considering swapping to 2x 'refurbed' 12TB enterprise drives and running ZFS RAIDZ1. So even though they'd have a decent amount of hours on them, they'd be better quality drives and fewer disks means less change of any one failing (I have good backups).

The next time I have one of my current drives die I'm not feeling like staying with my current setup is worth it, so may as well change over now before it happens?

Also the 6x disks I have at the moment are really crammed in to my case in a hideous way, so from an aesthetic POV (not that I can actually seeing the solid case in a rack in the garage),it'll be nicer.

The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has been asked what checks are in place to vet firms after fast-fashion retailer Shein refused to answer "basic questions" over its supply chain.

Liam Byrne, chair of the Business and Trade Committee, wrote to Dame Julia Hoggett asking if the stock market had tests in place to "authenticate statements" by firms seeking to list, "with particular regard to their safeguards against the use of forced labour in their products".

It comes after MPs branded the evidence of a Shein lawyer "ridiculous" when she refused to say if the company sold products containing cotton from China.

Byrne told Dame Julia that MPs were "profoundly concerned at the lack of candid and open answers".

"The committee would like to draw your attention to the concerning evidence we heard," he said in a letter to the LSE chief executive on Friday.

The BBC understands Shein, founded in China but now headquartered in Singapore, has filed initial paperwork to list in the UK, which could value it at £50bn. It follows the retailers rapid rise to one of the biggest fast fashion firms globally, shipping to customers in 150 countries.

But questions remain over the company's supply chain amid allegations of forced labour and human rights abuses.

Hi everyone,

I decided to switch away from Notion and self-host an obsidian-livesync service but I found that the documentation of the project, while pretty comprehensive, is written in pretty bad English and doesn't provide a ready to use official container. As such and mostly for myself, I created a container which automatically configures CouchDB by downloading and parsing the official install script provided by the obisidian-livesync maintainer and wrote a blog post explaining how to self-host the container.

Here is the container source:

Here is the container on hub.docker.io:

And finally, here is the tutorial:

I created AnyAppStart - a control panel to Start/Stop/Restart/View Logs for apps in Docker, Systemd, VMs or anything else (with user scripts). Written in Go and React. Features:

  • User can add any types (like LXC or WakeOnLAN)
  • Control remote machines via SSH
  • Config in yaml files, no DB
  • Simple API

Reasons for creating AnyAppStart

My use cases:

  • Resource heavy but rarely used apps. Start them only when necessary
  • Environments for development, learning and experimenting. I do not need them all running at the same time
  • Being able to control local and remote apps from one place, no matter what type (Docker, Systemd, VM, bash script)

Installation

There is Docker image available, but inside the container only Docker Type will work, which kinda defeats the purpose of this app. So installing binary is recommended.

All binary packages can be found in the latest release. There are .deb, .rpm, .apk (Alpine Linux) and .tar.gz files.

Supported architectures: amd64, i386, arm_v5, arm_v6, arm_v7, arm64.

For amd64 there is a deb repo available

Hi All, I know we've done the "how you get notifications" piece a fair bit but I'm curious, what notifications matter to you? What services do you want notifications for, is it backups, monitoring your arr stack or seeing uptime on your servers over notification format.

I've just been through and setup a Telegram bot and if the software I am using doesnt natively work directly I use Gotify in the middle. Now I want to know what matters most to you, what notifications do you want to see and ones you don't care about.

I love the idea of having all my quick notes, to-do lists, knowledge base, journal, plans, etc., in one single, neatly organized place. Why wouldn’t I? But deciding on which Notion alternative to use is overwhelming.

There are so many options, and all claim to be the best. Online opinions are all over the place (as expected), and these apps aren’t exactly simple—they’re complex for good reasons, but that makes choosing one even harder. And don’t get me started on the endless YouTube videos on the topic—I could spend weeks or months researching this and testing every single one of them, but honestly, this is not how I wanna spend my time so I will ask you guys instead.

My Current Setup:

  • Markor: Used it for quick thoughts, journaling, and to-do lists but stopped using it because it’s not suited for everything, and there’s no sync between Android and Linux (becsuse it is android only).

  • Obsidian: Currently using it as my knowledge base and for long notes, simple to-do lists, and occasional journaling. Haven’t fully migrated to it or created an organized setup because I’m looking for a FOSS Notion alternative.

  • Standard Notes: Good for quick notes, but most features are paywalled, making it feel limited.

  • jtx Board: My go-to for journaling—it’s simple and quick to use.

What I need:

  • FOSS, but only if it’s just as good as proprietary options in:
    • Auto-sync between my Android phone and Linux desktop
    • Journaling
    • Quick notes
    • To-do lists
    • Planning
    • Managing personal projects
    • Writing down thoughts
    • A really good Android app
    • Easy to use
    • Free for personal use

What I don’t care about:

Collaboration. This is for my personal use—no sharing, no team features.

Given my messy current setup and specific requirements, can anyone give me some recommendations?

Lords of the Fallen publisher CI Games confirmed it would not "embed social or political agendas" in its games due to the "high risk it can present".

According to Strefa Inwestorów (thanks, PC Gamer), global marketing director Ryan Hill told investors the studio would focus on "excellent user experience with compelling thematics and characters created specifically for core and adjacent audiences" following perceptions "a number of high profile releases underperform[ed] commercially during the last year" due to what he believed to be "social or political agendas."

"We remain committed to producing player-first video games that prioritise an excellent user experience with compelling themes and characters created specifically for core and adjacent audiences," Hill said when asked for the studio's position on "DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion - more commonly known as EDI in the UK] in gaming".

"While some video games have recently taken the opportunity to embed social or political agendas within their experiences, it is clear that many players do not appreciate this, and as a result, we have seen a number of high profile releases underperforming commercially during the last year alone.

"Our games will always be developed to maximise player enjoyment and commercial success, and as such, we will not be integrating any social or political agencies into these experiences going forward having observed the high risk this can present."

Hill did not expand on his definition of "social or political agencies", nor defined what "high risk" meant to him and studio leadership. He also didn't exemplify what games he considered had "underperformed commercially" or, indeed, clarify what commercial success looked like to him.

CI Games declined to comment further on Hill's statement to investors.

The action-RPG is currently sitting on a "mixed" Steam user score, and received just two stars in Eurogamer's Lords of the Fallen review. A sequel is currently in development.

What are your thoughts on this?

Will this become available in older models like FSR and Framegen or will it be exclusive to RDNA4. It would be a boon to RDNA3 mobile chips if the performance gain is comparable to FSR3.

Axorax from Windows subreddit has put up a list of free useful apps and I've noticed recommendations for animated wallpapers, so I figured I'd put together a list just for Linux folks:

I'm ashamed to say at the time of posting I haven't test any of those solutions - never felt a need for moving background hoarding my resources. LWP is most straight-forward, probably easiest to develop for with least resource-heavy results. While ScreenPlay looks exactly like what people loved about Wallpaper Engine and probably easiest to get into.

Economic consolidation is killing us. Robbing us of value, dismantling the financial fabric of our society, and disconnecting us from one another. From Walmart to Uber to Amazon and beyond, everyone loses: consumers, workers, and ultimately even the heartless profiteers orchestrating this disaster.

DoJ report acknowledges attack ‘was so systematic and coordinated that it transcended mere mob violence’

The DoJ’s findings acknowledged the role of Tulsa law enforcement in the massacre, including that of Tulsa police who “deputized hundreds of white residents, many of whom – immediately before being awarded a badge – had been drinking and agitating for [a lynching]”. According to the report, more than 500 men were deputized in less than 30 minutes.

he was told he “could now ‘go out and shoot any [N-word] you see and the law’ll be behind you’”.
