It is at least anime-adjacent. The actual definition of anime can get blurry sometimes and debates have been had over whether a show like Avatar the Last Airbender is an anime or not. I am glad that you enjoyed the show! When it comes to a form of media like anime, there are as many different types/genres of anime as there are any other medium, so it can get tough to find something that clicks right away. If somebody asks me for recommendations to start getting into anime, I usually ask them what kinds of shows/movies they already like and then pick anime in a similar genre or with similar themes.

Also, Time of Eve sounds really interesting.

This past week I have not had too much time to watch anime, but managed to keep up with a couple airing shows.

  • Frieren once again outdid itself with what is my new favorite episode of its run. It was so good that I rewatched it and made a second top-level comment in the episode thread about it.
  • Eminence in Shadow had an interesting episode this past week. As a source reader, my reaction seems to differ a lot from anime-only reactions that I have seen. There were some serious bits of the story left on the cutting room floor from Episode 6 that source readers haven't been happy about. I just hope that they were cut in order to give us something special later in the season like they did at the end of season 1.
  • Helck continues its backstory exposition dump. I like backstory as much as the next viewer, but you know what else I also like? Story. About a full third of the show's runtime has been this single flashback sequence explaining Helck's past. I really think that instead of a solid 5-6 episode flashback chunk, it could have been interspersed with the rest of the story (see Frieren for a good example of how to mix backstory and story).

Finally, a bit of a meta comment. If you haven't seen, the lemmy.ml admins decided to remain defederated from the ani.social instance, home of the episode discussion bot. I have thoughts on this, but setting those aside, I just wanted to let people know that the bot is still making posts like before, but over in a different community on the ani.social instance. If your account is on an instance that federates with ani.social, then great! Go check out the community over there and you can see the discussions that happen on those threads. If your account is on lemmy.ml, then you will have to make and use a different account to access that community. That can either be an account on ani.social or an account on an instance that still federates with ani.social.

@ram@lemmy.ca if you would be so kind as to do the pinning/unpinning, that would be lovely. Mod of my heart!

I know I am replying to a bot, but if you are on lemmy.ml the syntax the bot provides above won't bring you to an up-to-date version of the community I linked. Instead, it would only contain content from before the defederation happened. That is why I used a fully qualified url in my comment.

The lemmy.ml admins don't seem to intend on re-federating with ani.social any time soon. I don't know what @chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org (the bot maintainer) intends to do, but I moved my episode discussion contributions over to the home community for the bot here. Note that because of the defederation, you won't be able to use your lemmy.ml account, but will have to use an account either on ani.social or another lemmy instance that does federate with ani.social.

I have opinions on how this has been handled on the part of the ml admins and they aren't positive, but I don't want to fill up this thread with them.

I am sure others will likely chime in as I have not seen it, but looking at ratings on MAL and AniList, it has been extremely well received. Hope you enjoy!

It sucks. Here is the docs page about lemmy markdown. It consists of a bunch of colons and needs to be on its own line (can't be in-line).

So, this past week saw the defederation of ani.social from lemmy.ml. If you aren't familiar with ani.social, it was an anime-focused instance and the host of the episode discussion bot that used to make the episode discussion posts here. I don't want to rehash things that have already been said in other threads other than to bring it to people's attention that may have missed the original posts about it.

This past week has been very busy with irl work for me so I have only really been able to keep up with Eminence in Shadow and Frieren. If you aren't watching Frieren at this point, I am not sure what I can say to convince you, but the animation of the most recent episode was absolutely amazing and completely elevated the manga to new heights I could not have imagined.

@ram@lemmy.ca if you would be so kind as to do the pin/unpin shuffle once again.

I personally have been super impressed with Frieren, but I get that that is a show that isn't necessarily for everybody. The other two shows I have been enjoying this season, Eminence in Shadow and 100GF, are similarly not for everybody as you either enjoy the humor or not since comedy can be really subjective (especially genre parodies like those two).

Yeah, in this case, if you need to change host instances, I think it might make sense to have a clean break. It means that the discussion link table won't link back to episodes posted by shinobu, but the link table was broken on lemmy.ml anyway (it has ani.social post ids with a lemmy.ml domain) and I think I am the only person that has said anything about it in the past. So, I am guessing that it might not be a critical feature for most people. Shameless plug time: a clean break would also ease the transition to a tool different than holo (cough). The lack of instance-agnostic links to posts is really problematic for cross-instance automation in general and I don't have a good solution for that yet.

You're not wrong and I think that is exactly what chaorace's reply to me in that thread is worried about. Frankly this situation is really unfortunate and I don't have a good answer.

Bot maintainer made a post over here.

tl;dr is that the short term plan is to try to reverse the defederation. Longer term plan if that doesn't work is probably to try to resume posting with a user on a different instance.

The root of the problem is that the anime community on the lemmy-verse has more or less consolidated to this community for episode discussions. If you look at other instances, there is a huge drop off in activity when it comes to episode discussion communities compared to here. So, it would not make sense to try to move this community to another instance as that would pretty much destroy what has been built up here compared with just moving the host instance for the bot.

[–] wjs018@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

That is most unfortunate. It doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that this was done without any elaboration or warning. Without a reversal, if we want to keep automated discussion posts, there are a couple options I see. Either posts are made by a local account on lemmy.ml, discussions are moved to a different community/instance, or ultimately automated posts could go away.

This is the most active lemmy anime community, with the next most active belonging to hexbear.net which is a polarizing instance to say the least. Beyond those, it is a steep drop in activity. The anime community on lemmy.world for instance most recently had a post 20 days ago (beehaw's anime & manga community is a bit better at 5 days ago). All this is to say it would be a steep ask to get the community that has essentially consolidated to lemmy.ml to move elsewhere. I hope it gets resolved soon.

As our friendly shinobu-chan continues to be impaired from Seasonal Affective Disorder, the Helck thread for today's episode wasn't created. So, in the bot's place, here is the post for episode 13.

The bot isn't yet updated with Fall shows yet, and I haven't seen a discussion thread for this show yet, so I thought I would go ahead and make one for the first two episodes.
