Seems like it’s a big work across multiple codebases: mutter, gtk, gstreamer, mesa, gtk applications, might be also kernel. There are improvements and blogposts, but we still didn’t get graphics offloading on regular fedora desktop. I suspect that’s why it seems like devs are doing this feature over and over again. Let’s wait while they cook for us.
you can. in that case compilation step is replaced with downloading a binary.
compare steam and workbench manifests. in the first case manifest instructs to download a binary and copy stuff into the right place, in second one - to use meson buildsystem, it does everything for you.

Good opportunity to say how annoying are update notes like “We are continuing to improve our application. We fixed a couple more issues to make it more stable”. Corporate style, uselessness and the fact that this update can contain some stupid redesign is disgusting.

Whenever I look at shell contributors implementing widgets that already exist in gtk and libadwaita I wonder what if shell was written using gtk? Is libpeas not good enough to provide extensions support?
