By no means did i mean that federated platform's wont work, far from it. Im more considering the reputational damage of the platform. For me all the .ml instances unresolvable. And it doesn't look good when the "official" instance is lost. If i were an outsider considering moving to lemmy and i saw vlemmy disappear, lemmy world get hacked, and .ml loosing their domains id be pretty hesitant on making the switch. Thats where i sit for the moment. Lets all hope we can get a good track record going now.

Where I live i cant access any .ml instances so for me even the lemmy.ml is down

This is why we host our instance on a .org. Honestly another huge blow for Lemmy. It doesn't really inspire confidence in the platform. Hopefully after enough time passes smaller instances like us and the bigger ones left will have help up a good track record to inspire confidence again.

Im aware that my server may cache illegal content. However this is usually easily delt with. It can simply be removed/user banned and can be purged from the server. This can all be done from the admin settings.

I also dont see the main instances defederating us. Our server will be moderated just as any other main lemmy server would. Just setting it up so that the users from our server can intract with any other server they wish. Any content or anyone who breaks our rules will be removed/banned. Just because we have an open federation policy does not mean there will be a lack of moderation.

Thanks for the legal article has very useful info

I just recently set up unilem.org aimed at federating with everyone. Yes this will include meta. Some will like it and others will not but thats the beauty of the fediverse. You can choose your home or even make your own.

The server is still in very early stages but im looking for everyones input on potential issues I could face so I can start getting ahead of the curve of some of them. Im obviously aware of issues such as bot server and illegal content being fetched etc.

Any other tips on hosting or just is general is will be much appreciated. Mabye you know some tools that could help? Im aware this is very ambitious but i think its possible if done right.

Much thanks in advance for the help.

The explanation box is more just to prevent bots, once im confident that the captcha is working as intended I'll likely remove it

Well its only a new instance but no problems so far.

This could be a concern but i think it will even out in the end. Many people will naturally gravitate to am instance that suites them. I created unilem.org as an instance aimed at not defederating. Some will like that and join others will not and find a different place that suits them. Its the beauty of the fediverse. You can choose your home or even host your own.

There are tool to export and import subs and blocks but as far as I'm aware at the moment there is no account transfer utility yet.

I think users are jumping over to instances that more fit their personal values. Its why I left lemmy.world and created unilem.org. An instance for no defederation. It might not be for everyone. But i prefer to be able to access everything in one place and do thr moderation/blocking on the user level.

If i were to die today my instance would still continue. If both me and the other admin were to die at the same time then everyone is just shit outta luck at that point

Im wondering what ways people advertise/grow their lemmy instances. I recently just created mine and would like to put it out there as one of the options. How did you discover your instance and what drew you to it?
