This is fucking insane. I'm literally considering not buying a car after this one I have until something is done about this data collection bullshit. I work from home and I only drive my car to the gym and take the kids out somewhere when my wife is at work. I can do all that with a fucking scooter no problem. Also, I read Mozilla's article, all of it, and there is some hope. If you don't use the car app and don't use the connected service (I do neither of those), then the data collection is limited. Another option is to look for dumb cars. I know they exit, some people mentioned them to me somewhere here on Lemmy and even gave me links. It's been a long time since then.

I see. I've always thought the data collection is through those smart dashboards. So, thank you for the info. Also, isn't 3g dead by now? Can those modems be ripped off the car, BTW?

How can a dashboard that has absolutely nothing "smart" about it collect my data? It's only a radio that has Bluetooth, how's that going to collect data and send it to the manufacturer?

You can still find cars dumber than shit now. Just go for the "lower trim" models. Those are normally cheaper and have simple dashboards, nothing internet connected, because ya know "they have less features". As if that were a bad thing. Lol

You said "every car", so I'll assume you do mean every car, which is very much untrue. My 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a very much dumb car. It has a radio, CD player and Bluetooth. And that's what I want essentially. I don't want anything to do with those that are connected to the internet and get OTA updates. I'll never buy those for as long as I can find the other ones. Cars like mine do exit and will continue existing, as a "low trim" model, which is ~~why~~ what I always get anyway.

If I buy an EV, it won't be a smartphone on wheels. There is no way I'm giving these fuckers my driving data.

How do you enable swiping in this keyboard. I can't, for the life of me, find it in the settings.

[–] penquin@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah well that sucks. Monochrome icons are ugly. Might as well use gnome then. I'm just hoping that we will still have the option to change back to the colored ones.

I get it, but the books were so good that the movies made me mad. Especially, the count of Monte cristo. That really got on my nerves. They actually modified the story to tell different events. :/

[–] penquin@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

Man, this is such a silly and unfortunate exploit. Damn! I hope it gets patched quick.

So many people recommended the Talisman and The Stand. I'll check them out.

I didn't know about this keyboard actually. Just installed it and it's great. Only issue with it that it only supports English. I guess I'll use it for English only. Thank you so much.

EDIT: never mind. It does support other languages. All set now.

This may sound dumb, but I've never read for this man. I've always just heard about him on social media but never ventured to read his work. Opinions, please. Should I invest? Feeling like fiction lately. I've read so much non-fiction ~~through~~ throughout my life that I think I deserve a couple of fiction books to get busy with for a little while. Thanks in advance

EDIT: Thank you so much to all who answered. I have read and appreciated every single comment. I have decided to start with fairy tale since I ran into the book at Walmart. So giving that a shot to see. Thank you so much

Holy shit! This book is insane. I'm half way through it, and I can't even express how I feel about this book. Masterpiece? Doesn't give it justice. I've never done this in my life over a book (and I've read well over 500 books for the last 30 years), I got emotional during some parts of this book. I have ADHD and it's very hard for me to focus when reading, unless it's an extremely good book like this I guess. This probably sounds silly to some. The reason why I'm only just finding out about this book is because I'm new to the West. An immigrant if you will, and never heard of this book until a couple of weeks ago. If you haven't read this book; I highly recommend it. Alexandre Dumas is a genius.

Is it just me, or are you folks running Wayland with no issues? I've even forgotten I was on Wayland until I looked at the settings the other day. I have all AMD, btw. I have zero issues so far. Anyone else?

I read in both Arabic and English. Some books are very hard for me to grasp, so I find a translated copy and read it in Arabic. For example, I'm currently reading "the Count of Monte Cristo". It Has some old English that gets me confused a lot, even though I have a Kobo where I can just press and hold on a word to translate it, but still, the storyline as a whole got confusing, so I read it in Arabic. Much better. I'd love to hear from folks here :)

Hi all, I have a desktop and laptop with a touchscreen. Both running Plasma/Wayland. English is my second language and I search things in my language often. Maliit works just fine on the laptop, but it's basically a dud on the desktop. I can only enable and disable it. It never shows nor work at all on the desktop. Tried onboard, gnomes on screen keyboard, and that thing is useless, too. Anyway to make Maliit work or is there an alternative? I really need it for the desktop. Thanks.

What is this message on the lock screen? I get this at really random times and very rarely. Is this a bug? If so, I'll report it. If it's not a big, then what is it?

How does this firm (or whatever it is) know I torrented something? My VPN app took a shit in the middle of a download and I think it exposed my IP to some "anti-piracy" bullshit firm that contacted my ISP. ISP emailed to let me know and to "not do it again". How does this firm know about torrenting? Do they like watch these sites and hope someone's VPN slips like mine did today?

Running Endeavour OS Linux and just updated to plasma 6.0.5, framework 6.3.0, Qt version 6.7.1 on Wayland. I use capslock strictly as my brain refuses to learn using shift (I do touch type no problem), but as well know the capslock is very slow on Linux which always results in text like THis. So, I've found a fix for it online and one of the steps is to enable the option "make capslock an additional Ctrl", but that's not gone :/ What to do?

Not sure if this is something voyager can do or if it's a Lemmy thing. I don't see any indicator that a post is locked when the mods lock it.

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that's it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can't (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I think those massive tablets on these cars with all the touch buttons are very dangerous. I like an "entertainment system" that only connects to my phone with either a headphone jack ~~of~~ or Bluetooth. It's a car, not a PC.

I was going through my block list and found out that there is no way to unblock any of them on the app. There was nothing to click or 3 dots for options or anything. Just a list of the blocked communities. Anyone knows how? Thanks

Switching from Endeavour OS to Nobara

Hi all, I've been having issues with my favorite games on EndeavourOS Linux. Also, on top of that, an update the other day deleted my whole plasma desktop and left me with a skeleton of SDDM. I got it fixed, but some things are still wonky. I'm honestly getting tired of maintaining it and I just want something that just works for my video games and some coding. Nobara sounded awesome after some research. I do have a couple of questions for you all before switching:

  1. Is Nobara atomic? Immutable? Or whatever those distros are called.

  2. I have my /root, /home separate each in their own drive, plus a 3rd one for my steam and other games. Since I'm coming from Arch and I'll only be formatting my root drive, what folders/files will I need to remove from my /home directory after switching to Nobara so I don't have issues?

  3. Since I separate drives for everything, I'll be doing a manual partitioning when I install Nobara, and will be choosing btrfs for my /root so I can do snapshots with timeshift. My question is, does Nobara set up the subvolumes automatically for me when I do manual partitioning, or do I need to set them up myself?

  4. How hard is it to set up snapshots in grub?

  5. Or does Nobara have a back up tool already that already does snapshots?

Thank you.
