I'm Australian. We have deep psychological, cultural, and political ties to the US.

I vividly remember my grade 3 teacher explaining that we would be speaking Japanese if the US hadn't saved us in WWII.

That may (or may not) be true, but there's a pervasive feeling that we need the US lest we be annexed by China.

Just a few short months ago I found China's politics of censorship and authoritarianism fairly repugnant, but honestly now they're my preferred global super power. I for one welcome our new communist overlords.

Anyhow, I wholeheartedly agree that Europe becoming more self sufficient is the right way forward. Hopefully Australia can build stronger ties with Europe also.

Sadly we're due for an election in the coming months and I suspect our conservative party is going to win and fall in to line behind Trump.

Just a reminder that the coming recession will be blamed on immigrants, canadians, woke boycotts, Ukraine, renewable energy, LGBTIQ+, and so on.

If you're hoping it will make MAGA idiots reject Trump, it won't. It just provides more fuel to drive fascist agendas.

That's not really how mortgages work.

If your house is worth less than your mortgage the bank can't just ask you to cough up. That's absurd really.

Houses are most people's primary investment. You can argue about whether or not that ought to be the case but it is the case and can't be readily undone.

While it's still getting harder to purchase your first house, everyone who already has a house has an interest in preserving house prices. I don't have the numbers to hand, but something like 60% of voting Australians live in a home they own, but fewer 20 to 30 year olds own homes than at any time in the last 50 years.

... that's a complicated way of saying things are harder than ever for first home owners but there's still no political support to address the core problems.

Like most phobias I think most people experience discomfort with this imagery but to really have a phobia it needs to be an unreasonable level of anxiety I think.

IDK why we have a hard wired aversion to these. It might be a vestigial response to some kind of predator or danger which is no longer relevant.

On the other hand I suspect that their FoI requests will be ignored.

Searx just proxies other engines, so the results are the same as the upstream results.

I've never really had a problem with results from any engine TBH.

The main thing I've learned over the last few years with Searx is that some instances are terrible while others are great. Some are slow, and often get blocked and take days for the admin to get a new IP or whatever. Right now I'm using perennialte.ch and it's been great. They also redirect results at reddit to an alternative frontend which is a nice touch.

Yeah I think most of my searches start with the name of the site I want results from.

I was with kagi for a year.

It was fine.

Their CEO is an asshole though. There was that thing where he went a bit nutty over some mild criticism. I don't remember the details.
