I'm curious about the speed variations of the spinning circular piece (positioned to act as the violins' bow).

On the bright side, all these companies walking away from DEI policies make the Corporate Equity Index’s lists a lot more useful for folks who want to vote with their wallet.

For a while it felt like having a company’s name on the list was perfunctory, which makes it unremarkable.

Doing the right thing before/after it being popular is remarkable, and worthy of my patronage.

Finally, a self-driving car with actual intelligence.

The nonprofit announced Friday plans to shutter its South Lake Union and University District locations, citing retail theft, public safety concerns and rising rents and operational costs.

A video sponsored by a housing developer, suggesting that the real problem with the cost of housing is high taxes and the pesky nay-saying public.

They also never mention the high and increasing vacancy rate of newly built luxury housing. Just trust us! Rich people will move in soon!

Just across the border from Vancouver, the Seattle Housing Authority is rebuilding modern apartment complexes that are actually intended for low income, disabled and first-gen immigrant residents, not luxury condos that some theoretical rich person maybe might buy someday.

I’m sharing a screenshot of the two together as “how it started / how it’s going”.

He’s also still getting tons of regular work outside sci-fi. He’s got a comedy with Paul Reiser coming out later this year that looks pretty funny, too.

He doesn’t need to go back to Trek, and I’m glad for that.

Regarding Kate Mulgrew, Prodigy made a lot of sense for her given her talents as a voice actor. (RIP Infinity Train)

I think it technically counts as Spring, but Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction has me enraptured.

But if we're talking about Summer alone, hands down, Dungeon People.

Hi Lemmy friends,

Is there any way to have Lemmy's community RSS feeds provide more than 20 <item> tags at a time? Can I add a querystring variable to get the next page or two of data?

Background on what I'm trying to do: I run the Movie, TV and Game trailers community. I'd like to create a simple website / landing page that displays an ongoing roll of the latest/top/hot trailers posted to the community.

I can use the community's RSS feed for this, but the feed only includes a maximum of 20 entries (for an average end-to-end runtime of about one hour). I'd really like to get the next few pages of entries as well.

Thanks!

Asking the person you’re debating to look up your own citations is certainly one way to converse. But ok, let’s go for it.

In Aug 2023, Forbes published an article describing the proposal of “unfettered access” you referred to:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilybaker-white/2023/08/21/draft-tiktok-cfius-agreement/

In June 2024, the Washington Post reported that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) turned down the proposal and includes some broad reporting as to why:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/tiktok-offered-an-extraordinary-deal-the-u-s-government-took-a-pass/ar-BB1nfAcE

The article isn’t very technical, but it mentions some interesting responsibility angles that the US wouldn’t want to back themselves into:

  • throwing open some, but not all, doors to server operations and source code creates a mountain of work for the government to inspect, which would be a workload nightmare
  • the US government’s deepest concerns seem to be about what data is going out (usage insights on the virtuous side and clipboard/mic/camera monitoring on the ultra shady side) and data coming in (bespoke content intended to influence US residents of China-aligned goals). Usage insights are relatively benign from national security perspective (especially when you can just mandate that people in important roles aren’t permitted to use it). Shady monitoring should be discoverable through app source code monitoring, which you can put the app platforms (Apple, Google, whoever else) on the hook for if they continue to insist on having walled app gardens (and if you trust them at all). The content shaping is harder to put your finger on though, since it’s super easy to abstract logic as far out as you need to avoid detection. “Here, look at these 50M lines of code that run stateside, and yeah, there are some API calls to stuff outside the sandbox. Is that such a big deal?” Spoiler: it is a big deal.
  • the US can’t hold Byte Dance accountable so long as it remains in China. Let’s say the US agreed to all this, spent all the effort to uncover some hidden shady activity that they don’t like (after an untold amount of time has passed). What then? They can’t legally go after Byte Dance’s foreign entity. The US can prosecute the US employees, but it’s totally possible to organize in such a way that leaves those domestic employees free from misdeeds, leaving prosecutors unable to enforce misdeeds fairly. It’d be a mess.

The second article explains this somewhat, but I’m admittedly painting some conjecture on top regarding how a malicious actor could behave. I’ve got no evidence that Byte Dance is actually doing any of that.

But going back to the “influence the public” angle, I’m struggling to see how different TikTok is versus NHK America (Japan’s American broadcasts) or RT (American media from the Russian standpoint) aside from being wildly more successful and popular. But I guess that’s all there is to it.

I’d prefer our leaders also be transparent with us regarding their concerns about TikTok. The reductive “because China!!1!” argument is not compelling on its own.

Do you have any citation for that?

Around 6pm US Pacific today (July 30 2024), The Needling published the following post, but pulled it offline sometime before 11:15pm that same evening.

The url was https://theneedling.com/2024/07/30/texts-reveal-mayor-harrells-kink-for-dressing-as-dog-sitting-in-rich-peoples-laps/ but now goes to an error page.

The article text is below.

——

Texts obtained through a public records request by The Needling confirm suspicions that Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has in fact spent the majority of his on-the-clock time in public office indulging a kink for dressing up like a dog and sitting in rich people’s laps.

“Up until now, we thought this idea that Mayor Harrell is super cozy with the richest people in town was more of a figure of speech, but we now know through texts he knew very well were public record that he spends much of his work time dressed as a leashed, furry pup going door to door in the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods,” said senior Needling investigative reporter Joey Tyler. “Now there’s nothing wrong with pup play–but on the job engaging in mansion backroom deals as a public servant? Some of these texts are graphic, so let’s just say he also likes getting on his knees and getting a really good sniff in there when he greets them.”

The interactions were confirmed by Stuart Sloan, the rich man and owner of U Village with whom Harrell “shared disgust” regarding Denny Blaine’s queer nude beach—enough to attempt ruining it with a privately funded children’s playground last year.

“While I am disgusted by human nudity at Denny Blaine Park, I do get off on mayors who want to wag their tails and lick my face when I need their attention,” said Sloan. “Bruce is such a good lap dog: He always comes when called. Just last night, he came over to my Lake Washington mansion, laid his floppy-eared head in my lap while I smoked $100 cigars and drank the last bottle of the most expensive wine on the planet. I told him exactly how I wanted this city run, and he agreed to every single request. Going forward, nudity will not only be banned in public parks but also inside your home.”

At press time, the city was hopeful Harrell would tie himself a little less to the demands of the rich when he was spotted playing fetch with Mr. Sloan in Cal Anderson Park’s unofficial off-leash dog area.

On Friday, July 26, 2024, during the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, an artistic performance intended to be a part of the planned program was not broadcast in the United States.

At approximately two hours into the broadcast, shortly after the introduction of France's athletes (the last group to be introduced), the program moved to a series of music and dance performances, including a floating disco and a Dionysian feast.

During this, the US broadcast cut away to advertising breaks and exclusive interviews with US-based athletes while audiences outside the US remained with the main program.

This video features a side-by-side comparison of this portion of the live broadcasts into Australia (via the broadcaster Stan.) and the United States (via the broadcaster NBC) to illustrate the differences between what was presented to each audience.

Audio for each broadcast has been isolated onto opposing audio channels (US on the left, Australia on the right), allowing viewers to use headphones to selectively listen to either channel alone, or both at the same time.

From the article:

Diaz made two claims against PubliCola.

First, he claimed that we maliciously reported a “false rumor” when we mentioned the existence of a rumor reported in a series of KUOW stories, which Rantz and Diaz discussed in their interview. (We removed this reference, which we originally noted because Diaz and Rantz spent some time discussing it).

Second, Diaz said he never claimed that being gay is a defense against sexual harassment allegations by women, and that we said he did. According to Diaz’ attorneys, the former police chief actually made “the opposite point,” by noting that it’s possible for gay men to be “misogynist.”

“You also write that, during his interview with Jason Rantz, Adrian repeatedly ‘returned to the idea that gay men can’t sexually harass or assault women,'” Diaz’ attorneys wrote. (This is one of the phrases we edited, as described above.) “That’s also false. In fact, Adrian highlighted the opposite point during the interview, saying, ‘You know, just because you’re a gay man doesn’t mean you can’t be a misogynist.”

Kroger Co. has identified the 579 stores (across the US) it plans to sell to C&S Wholesale Grocers (aka Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union) in an effort to get antitrust regulators’ approval for its $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons Cos.

The deal would cover 124 stores across Washington state, including the following 27 stores in Seattle:

A Guest column in The Needling by District 5 Seattle City Councilmember Cathy Moore

We live in extremely politically divisive times, and that’s why it’s more important than ever to ask for more civility by repeatedly publicly threatening to open a can of whoop-ass on anyone who disagrees with you, doesn’t immediately follow your orders like when you were a court judge, or—God forbid—holds a mirror up to your face. Here are my favorite ways to ask for more civility and why.

When the state of Washington made it illegal for tribes to fish for salmon in their usual and accustomed places, it was a declaration of war. A landmark court case in 1974 would affirm the tribes’ treaty right to fish and establish them as managers of the resource, but the fate of salmon in the Pacific Northwest still hangs in the balance.

In a vote that Councilmember Tammy Morales called a “foregone conclusion,” the city council appointed Tanya Woo to fill the vacant Position 8 council seat on Tuesday. Woo—a Chinatown-International District activist who recently led a successful campaign to stop the expansion of a Salvation Army shelter in SoDo—lost to District 2 (Southeast Seattle) incumbent Tammy Morales in November; now, she’ll represent the entire city.
