Easydns are respected in the industry.

They also have a pro freedom CEO, and used to send out news letters covering intl privacy issues in tech.

What traffic did you get there ? Why dedicated, when most use VPS for lemmy ?

I was about to set up my family on matrix, but XMPP is way easier. Especially if you wanna self host.

I don’t work a job yet, and I’m new to server administration

The latter can help you acheive the former.

Get a cheap VPS under 3 usd /month. There's a few lemmy install guides out there for newbies

DNS is majorly flawed.

Web3 will bring better systems. We're already seeing decentralized file storage economies. Next will be distributed dns.

Handshake seems promising.

This is like corruption money. The large monopolies pay 'fines', while keeping their monopolies.

Meanwhile, any successful startups can't compete with these monopolies. They must pay the full tax rates, and eventually get bought out by the monopolies.

I like Presearch too. Their aiming for web3.

same. I feel that YT try their hardest to disempower their users.

Other video sites empower users, and are using far more advanced technology stacks.

I'm spending less and less time on this video site.

Lots of great alternatives, that are open and promote community building, instead of censorship.

True, but watch this space.

Odysee has grown 300 percent in the last 6 months - standing at 30 million montly view right now.

on the left = current web2 systems

on the right = future web3 disruptors

Nextcloud and dropbox are both web2 insofar as they can only run on someone's server. IPFS has the potential to provide layer 2 solutions that completely decentralize file storage and empower users (data no longer belongs to whoever owns the server).

I want to setup a matrix instance to help increase friends and family's privacy. Is there much value in creating my own instance?

I'm a beginner to linux and coding, but am good at following the steps on a video tutorial.

Alternatively i could get everyone to sign up on a preexisting instance + download the element app.
