I never even set up DNS for things that aren't public facing. I just keep /etc/hosts updated everywhere and ssh/scp/rsync things around using their non-fqdn hostnames.

Oh cool! I'm always a week or so late on Behind the Bastards, I wait until they put it on youtube so I can use sponsorblock and kill the ads. I like the coolzonemedia podcasts, but they're way too heavy on the ads for me without a blocker

They just don’t want to spend the money (that the government gave them years ago to do specifically that)

There was a great talk about this at a hacker convention a few years back. Infuriating, but great.

Molly White also wrote about this in the context of open access on the web and people being concerned about how their works are being used.

“Wait, not like that”: Free and open access in the age of generative AI

The same thing happened again with the explosion of generative AI companies training models on CC-licensed works, and some were disappointed to see the group take the stance that, not only do CC licenses not prohibit AI training wholesale, AI training should be considered non-infringing by default from a copyright perspective.

I recently set up a probe on a box in my home lab for Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) that does distributed monitoring of access to various Internet services to monitor censorship. It got me thinking there must be other distributed/collaborative things I could contribute to. I know of some others like:

  • BOINC is a grid computing academic research thing where you run a client and donate CPU to crunch academic research data
  • NYC Mesh you can volunteer to run a node for their community wireless mesh network

What are some other do-gooder things you can self host on your home network?

Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Or do.

Sorry, but this is such a cop out.

There's nothing else she can do, the democrats cannot force any legislative action here and it’s not like Trump is asking for confesses permission so there is nothing to filterbuster.

Wrong. They could do things like

  • Obsruct every bit of business the Republicans bring in both houses
  • Vote NO on every appointment
  • Go nuclear on any Dems that vote YES, publicly call for primaries against any Democrat not holding the line, and support primary challengers
  • Go on every media outlet talking about how Trump has no right to usurp the Congressional power of the purse and no right to touch funding of programs passed through Congress
  • Hold town halls both in their own districts and Republican districts
  • Refuse to authorize or re-authorize the AUMF
  • Issue Subpoenas for Musk and every member of DOGE, grill the fuck out of them, and hold them in Contempt of Congress if they hear any bullshit from them
  • Organize rallies and marches
  • Issue public statements that Americans, and people globally, should stop buying Teslas
  • Work with Canadian and Mexican counterparts on strategies to torch Musk businesses
  • File any and all relevant lawsuits against Trump and DOGE members, and follow through
  • Use whatever Congressional powers exist to subpoena/FOIA and publish any data about DOGE/Musk/etc they can get their hands on

That would be a start. You know, generally DO something and not be the rich, complacent servants of Wall Street they are. Or they could, hold a stupid signs during the SotU, send breathless donation solicitation emails, tell us they can't do anything because of the parlimentarian or whatever, and cross our fingers and wait for 2028.

Patty Murray sucks.
