Air America went bankrupt because they overestimated how many people wanted left wing radio in the USA. Mark Maron has talked about it over the years.

Air America was a station not a show. They went bankrupt and lost their license. When they reformed they could not gain a new license because of the previous bankruptcy and the costs of getting a new one.
At no point were they a syndicated radio program. They were a station unto themselves.
