It's probably more about how often it's visible in your part of the world than it happening at all if I had to guess.
Makes sense though because in America, everyone is American regardless of background, race, etc etc etc so people, in their search for ways to differentiate themselves from others, latch on to their heritage.

I'm not sure I agree if you look at the early campaign when he first joined he was very much not doing the same old same old... for like 2 weeks.
