Maybe within whatever bubble this article is aimed at, but I think it will be the vast minority who get that. But, we should push for it all around the world.

The world appear in the aggregator but when I searched specifically for one in particular, I wasn’t found. Just now it works so I don’t know what changed. Thanks for pointing that out, I wouldn’t have tried again.

When spam started to become overwhelming here I signed up to the largest mbin instance, Fedia.io. On one hand it runs well and isn't overrun with spam posts. On the other, it's missing some communities that are active on kbin.social.

It also doesn't have a meta or askmbin type of community, like kbin does.

Are there any other differences I should consider before deciding which of the two to drop?

Edit: I also got a server error when I posted this and thought my post had been lost. Phew! This doesn't happen on Fedia.io.

For those with the skills, yes. But it would be good to facilitate less technical people to use the platform too.

Just wondering if local communities could use kbin that way.

The problem is that we can’t leave. We’ve requested for our accounts to be deleted a long time ago. It’s not our fault that we’re still waiting.

The export process says it has copied subscriptions to the clipboard, but when I paste I just get the code I had pasted in to the browser console. I'm using Safari on macOS.

It's not a big deal. I don't mind starting from scratch.

I’ve been waiting for my account deletion request to be accepted for a while now. Maybe a few weeks.

I like Kbin in theory, but the spam is too distracting for me. I’m not in a position to volunteer either.

True, but the format is unique. The post format breaks up the flow of chatter into easily discernible units of conversation.

IRC, Discord and others have the continuous stream of thought with no beginning or end. On the other extreme, Instagram and TikTok require an image or video to post at all.

So I would say that FB groups have a distinct utility / identity separate from just other users being there.

Most social platforms have open source and federated alternatives now:

YouTube -> PeerTube
Instagram -> Pixelfed
Reddit -> Kbin / Lemmy
Twitter -> Mastodon
Facebook Groups -> ?

Friendica is the only alternative I've heard of for Facebook Groups. I haven't had enough time with it to see if it works as well yet, though. I've watched the very few videos about it online. So I have 2 questions.

  1. Does anyone have another suggestion besides Friendica? I'm a little surprised that FB Groups don't have an equivalent. Maybe Lemmy / Kbin serve the same purpose anyway but I did find FB groups a little more user-friendly for people who are less technical.

  2. Am I fooling myself in thinking that some platforms are more ethical than Meta/Twitter/Google? They might not profit off of genocide, but they probably can't moderate massive disinformation campaigns should they arrive on their shores. Telegram, for example, seems to be rife with dodgy channels that go unchallenged.

@MajorHavoc

@SLaSZT are there any instances in the EU?

[–] FarraigePlaisteach@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago

I spend more time blocking spammers than anything else. I’m sure it will improve once this issue gets more attention, but for now I think I’ll take a break from this site.

This isn’t good news if you read beyond the headline.

“While it sounds like a big number, this target uses some creative accounting with promised carbon capture to hide much lower actual emission cuts.”

She added: “Without honesty about an end to fossil fuels and finally tackling farming emissions, it’s hard to see how the EU will even clear this too-low bar it’s setting itself.” (Greenpeace spokesperson)

[–] FarraigePlaisteach@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

I assumed everywhere in the EU had this. Apparently many don’t!

Does that third also take into account any differences in manufacturing them? In other words, the entire lifecycle.

I run a web server (lighttpd) to serve a few pages to the world. I've installed the nordvpn client and when I run it two expected things happen:

  1. I lose my SSH connection to the machine, and
  2. My website becomes inaccessible to the public

Is it possible to run the VPN and still maintain the SSH connection on the local net and the web server connection on the internet?

I used to use qbittorrent because it had so many search plugins. Now I want something I ran run on a headless server. I've found qbittorrent-nox, but I don't see anything about plugins in the documentation.

Has anyone used it, or can recommend something else that has search sources already configured?

Any video on YouTube claiming to be a trailer isn’t. I know it’ll be a great movie but curious to see if there is a trailer.

Everything seems to have an RDA associated with it (Recommended Daily Allowance), so I imagine that something like this exists. I'm not interested in weight gain/loss though, purely nutrition. I'm a light eater and I'm sure I could do with supplements or dietary modification.

My user account on linux gets some Cron Jobs among mail from humans. I don't want to see the cron messages.

How can I script it so they are moved out of the "inbox" view (for example, on Squirrel Mail or my mobile client)?

I can grep for root@<domain> (Cron Daemon) to find the files that are emails from Cron. But I don't know how to actually process them from here.

Edit: they are using dovecot here, in case that makes a difference. Messages appear as files in the format:
1696857026.V902I580559fM559719.<domain>.de:2,

Edit 2: I have learned that the trailing S can be appended to a filename to mark it as read (or Seen), so I just need to know how to move it from the inbox to somewhere safe now.

Win98SE is getting stuck at the boot screen after installation. I don't personally see anything in the logs that indicates what the issue may be, but I'm a novice anyway.

Does anyone have settings they can share, in case I'm not doing something right. This is the tutorial I'm following: https://jensd.be/1640/windows/run-windows-98-se-on-a-modern-mac-with-m1

I accidentally found out that mpv can play videos from the TTY, meaning I don't have to log in to a graphical session. It even has a scaled OSD, unlike anything I've seen in a terminal UI.

Obviously there are plenty of terminal applications that work in a TTY, (edit) intext-mode or using ncurses (/edit), but are there any others like mpv that aren't strictly terminal apps but don't require a display server (maybe because they do the job themselves)?

I’m used to be able to just buy a tin whistle in D and that’s compatible with what all the schools teach kids, but I’ve spent ages searching for a solution to this one and I still don’t know what I need exactly.

The song / melody are in Ab.
