I understand. Thank you!

Thanks for answering! I was more wondering what kind of issue DNS solved and why it was solved that way. Also if anyone thought of another solution.

I also read the history here (https://cyber.harvard.edu/icann/pressingissues2000/briefingbook/dnshistory.html), and it still seems pretty sketchy to me that the concern of website names being inaccessible to small businesses and such was solved with the ICANN. Didn't this just make domain names into stuff you could speculate with? I may be tweaking rn, but I don't think it's necessarily right.

I've seen the crypto scams, unfortunately, which is basically what brought me to ask this question.

Is there a reason why they decided that domain names should be owned? Cause it kinda sounds like the metaverse, but older (like buying digital land and stuff). And idk, it just leaves a bad taste for me at least.

I meant more like did it have to be a central agreement for it to scale up to what it is now?

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 0 points 13 hours ago (5 children)

But why did everyone agree to that? Couldn't domains be determined by user, or at least a bit more decentralized? (ex: google.com leads to IP address 1.1.1.1)

I thought it would be cool to have my own TLD, but apparently it's all managed by the ICANN, so you can't just name your website with any TLD you want. There are different prices. But at least you can customize your second level domain. Why aren't TLDs like this?

Yay, racism ;-;

I still have vert fond memories with Maplestory. Granted, I stopped because it was getting quite Grundy, but I still remember the stories for lv 1 to 100

I think there would be PR to put in good smell. Or maybe highjacking to put in a putrid smell. Either way, entertaining.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

I should've asked the question earlier. Thank you so much!

Chances are they already did

There are a lot of Lemmy instances (or lemmies) out there. I don't even know how many my self 😅.

Each instances are characterized by their set of rules and moderation styles. You can see them through join-lemmy.org/instances as well as their description. To see a user's instance, just look at the domain after their username and the @.

Usually each instances can decide if they want to be able to interact with users and communities from a certain instance. That's called being federated.

Sometimes tho they don't think an instance's userbase or community follows their rules, so they can decide to cut all interactions with them. That's called being defederated.

The instance you are on, lemmy.world, is ironically, very US centered, and is the most popular instance. It's defederated from hexbear.net and lemmygrad.ml, so you will never see posts from them on lemmy.world unless it's a screenshot or something.

Since I'm on lemmy.ml tho, I can see posts from lemmy.world, hexbear and lemmygrad.

The benifit of this is that each instance can curate their experience how they see fit. If you think a moderator is being too trigger-happy on an instance, or you don't agree on how lenient they are (or whatever other reason), you can migrate to another instance. So let's say you want to go to lemmy.ml (which I highly doubt you would, but just an example), you go into your account settings, export your data, create your lemmy.ml account and import it. Currently it doesn't support importing comments, but the devs are working on it.

I'm not the best at explaining things, but I'm sure !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca could help.

That's it that's all I have to say.

For context, I am trying to do a save system for a game.

Edit: I was as to negotiate with the ones organizing the meeting to schedule for another day. I may have been panicked because I stopped Prozac for a while. I'm really sorry for lashing out like that, and thank you for your understanding.

I'm trying to get my diagnosis. Due to my parents not accepting me receiving mental healthcare, I had to do everything in secret.

It made my life so much easier when I finally got Prozac. I could finally sleep. Little to no obsessions or intrusive thoughts. I also stopped having pica.

But I can't get a diagnosis in most places without involving my parents. Until I found someone who could give me one.

Thing is, if I miss tomorrow's appointment, I can no longer have another chance at it. The health system is clogged and all.

I had everything planned out. Told them I was going out and all. But now, I can't, because our basement got flooded and I have to stay in order to help them.

I know this is what I get for wanting the best of two worlds: my parents' support and getting behind their backs. But I just didn't want to keep suffering anymore. I just want it all to stop.

For context, I am using the bevy engine.

I know that you aren't supposed to store stuff that might contain a lot of information, such as dialogue, NPCs and skills.

I already found a library that helps me store dialogue (bevy_yarnspinner), but I've yet to find such a library for other ressources.

So I was wondering, usually in RPGs, where and how are stats, skills, NPCs (including enemies) and maps are stored? And how does leveling up work?

For context, I am using the libraries bevy and print_typewriter.

I noticed that before the program even starts, I am able to type in characters. This is bad, since when I ask for the user's input, the previous characters are included inside of it.

How do I make sure that only the user's input after the program starts, and after I print a question gets in?

So according to Merriam Webster bread is: a usually baked and leavened food made of a mixture whose basic constituent is flour or meal

And cake is: A: a breadlike food made from a dough or batter that is usually fried or baked in small flat shapes and is often unleavened B: a sweet baked food made from a dough or thick batter usually containing flour and sugar and often shortening, eggs, and a raising agent (such as baking powder)

And yet some people don't think that cake is bread.

What's your opinion?

In order to update hyprland-git, I need to install hyprwayland-scanner-git. But when I try to install it, pacman says that it failed to commit a transaction.

I followed the arch wiki, but unfortunately, the file in question is owned by hyprwayland-scanner, so I'm not sure how to proceed.

I'm trying to make minesweeper using rust and bevy, but it feels that my code is bloated (a lot of for loops, segments that seem to be repeating themselves, etc.)

When I look at other people's code, they are using functions that I don't really understand (map, zip, etc.) that seem to make their code faster and cleaner.

I know that I should look up the functions that I don't understand, but I was wondering where you would learn stuff like that in the first place. I want to learn how to find functions that would be useful for optimizing my code.
