Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I just saw some joke/post about flat earthers menacing badly behaving people with taking them over the edge. But what if this was actually really fun? Essentially you'd be in freefall without having to use a rocket to go to space! You could also throw yourself out with everything that is needed to build a civilisation in space and live your fullest science fiction dreams without the hardships of actually reaching space.

This is ofc a big thought experiment based on the earth being flat, and there are many variables that can make the experience of jumping over the edge more or less fun. Maybe hitting the surface of the first turtle would hurt ("turtles all the way down" hypothesis), but then... maybe pating the cosmic turtle on the head is very fullfulling.

Time actually runs backwards because the earth is accelerating "up"wards at 9.8 Meters Per second, which means it would only take 30,591,067.142857 seconds before Earth reaches the speed of light, which is about 354.0632771164 days.

Meaning, if Earth existed for more than a year, it's already traveling faster than the speed of light, which, according to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, could only mean one thing:

Everything happening outside Earth's frame of reference is happeneing backwards.

Blackholes don't exist, they are light-bombs.

The big bang didn't happen, that was the end of the universe that we escaped from.

Earth is not flat, it's a TARDIS.

Checkmate, NASA!

I'm going to need you to flesh this out a little bit, then make a web 1.0 style site, complete with scrolling marqe, random fonts and sizes, and a lot of statements along the lines of "if you don't see the truth of this you are evil and should be thrown off the edge". Once that's in place I think we're good to launch your new conspiracy.

Yeah. If the earth were flat the edge would be a tourist attraction.

oh for real.. I've always wanted to ask them what they thought the underside looked like. I picture their simple minds imagining something like loose dirt clods falling off and maybe some roots and shit sticking out like I would have when I was a kid...

Ha I should have known someone else here would have the same first thought as I did. Didn't turn out so well for me and my buddy though - our stuff and our boat is still somewhere in the void.

many laughs and screams to be had. build a base and drop your stuff off. catapult from mountains nearby from epic shenanigans

Flat earthers believe that we are on a disc but are accelerating 1g per second per second. So if you jumped off the edge the earth would leave you behind forever never to return.

Would you even fall "down" at all, if it's at the edge of space? Wouldn't gravity cause you to just continue walking down the edge like it's another surface--how "thick" do they say the flat earth is? Have they ever described what the edge is supposed to be like and why no one has found it yet? Or do they maybe say there isn't an edge, but then what do they claim the earth's shape is supposed to be beyond the 2-D term "flat"?

I've seen a few "debunking" videos refuting some claim or another but I've never seen either the flat earthers or the debunkers address some of the most obvious questions about it. Usually they just demonstrate the curvature of the earth or something.

Dude. I just set a marble on the ground and it didn't roll to the bottom of the globe like it would if it were REALLY round!
