Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Romania’s far-right presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was taken for questioning by police as part of an investigation into his campaign.

The opposition far-right party AUR, which backs Georgescu in the presidential race announced that it will stage a protest outside the prosecutors’ office. Romania’s prosecutors are also investigating some of Georgescu’s allies and bodyguards.

Georgescu declined to comment when asked by the media about the questioning or any accusations against him.

We'll see how it goes, questioning is not enough to shut down fascist organizations.

edit: he's going to be investigated without being in jail (free), so expect lots of drama.

Accusations against him:

  1. incitement to actions against the constitutional order, in attempted form, provided for by art.47 C.p. rap. to art.32 C.p. rap. to art.397 para.2 C.p. – (punished by imprisonment from 15 to 25 years and prohibition of the exercise of certain rights)

  2. communication of false information, provided for by art.404 C.p. (punished by imprisonment from one to 5 years)

  3. false statements in continuous form, provided for by art.326 para. 1 C.p. with appl. art.35 para. 1 C.p. (regarding sources of financing of the electoral campaign and declarations of assets) (punished by a sentence of 3 months to 2 years or a fine)

  4. initiation or establishment of an organization with a fascist, racist or xenophobic character, joining or supporting, in any form, such a group, provided for by art. 3 paragraph 1 of O.U.G. 31/2002 (punishable by a sentence of 5 to 15 years and the prohibition of certain rights)

  5. promoting, in public, the cult of persons guilty of committing crimes of genocide against humanity and war crimes, as well as the act of promoting, in public, fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, conceptions or doctrines, as provided for in art. 5 of O.U.G. 31/2002 (punishable by a sentence of 3 months to 3 years and the prohibition of certain rights)

  6. initiating or constituting an organization with an antisemitic character, joining or supporting, in any form, such an organization, as provided for in art. 6 paragraph 1 of Law 157/2018.

(this is posted on many local news sites, here's one of them)

"Legionary" is a specific term relating to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Guard

Wow, an EU member state doing something against the russian election meddling, absolutely unexpected and far too late but at least they are trying! This investigation should have been conducted months before though.

Finally... A little bit to late, but it was expected, knowing how the Romanian authorities work. We must not forget that was risky arresting him right after the elections, when the tension was high.

[–] misk@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I just hope he’s found guilty of something or it will look very very very bad for western democracies.

[–] C0n57an71n@feddit.org 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oho..., my friend. He has a lot of skeletons in his closet... Just the fact that he's supported by Wagner related mercenaries, the fact that he declared 0$ spend on his campaign etc. should be more than enough not to let him run for presidency, maybe imprison him. Compared with USA, Romania will not let an ruzzian asset to occupy such a sensitive position.

[–] misk@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I really hope you can convict him of everything you accuse him of, otherwise trust in the democratic institutions might erode even further and it won’t be Georgescu’s fault. So far it looks like elites up top just cancelled elections. Fuck Russian assets but also fuck those centrist technocrats who made people vote for him.

50% of the population is retarded and takes its "information" from TicTok and Facebook. They act emotional, not logical. Same as USA. I had conflicts with my family for voting CG.

I didn’t think liberals would discard democracy this fast. I’d respect it a little bit more if they were more honest about it from the start.

Georgescu doing a discrete nazi salute (after warming up a bit) as he leaves:

I'm not going to post a mirror, but it's uploaded to reddit (in case anyone wants to download): https://www.reddit.com/r/Romania/comments/1iyrln3/c%C4%83lin_georgescu_face_salutul_nazist_la_ie%C8%99irea_de/

The gesture is very vague and that’s the point. You’re burning energy while his supporters can now say you’re seeing nazis everywhere. Better focus on real issues like growing inequality because ultimately that’s the reason you’re facing fascists at all.

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You don't get to reduce inequality with fascists in power.

[–] misk@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Fascists are a symptom and not the cause. If you’re suspending democracy you better do it for the good of the people and not the rich, otherwise you’re only delaying the inevitable.

Why you guys post links to websites with paywall?

[–] misk@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I link to the original so that others can tell what they are clicking on. There’s also a link to an archived version of the page in the post body if you can’t access original text.

Sorry! Now I've seen it. I've post a Romanian article about this events with the translations as well. Cheers!
