I've been looking into this new email service. It looks promising, yet the blog posted by Tutanota kind of worries me: https://tutanota.com/skiff-mail

Their servers are run in AWS? I really don't want to have my unencrypted emails in the hands of Amazon. And it is also mentioned that they're US based. I mean, Germany is also in the 14 eyes, but US is a much much more anti-privacy country.

It seems to me that you answered your own question. ✌️

Have you considered Proton Mail? It's by folk from CERN in Switzerland. So non-5 eyes. It's a very solid and reliable email service.

I did, in fact. But their free plan is too limiting if you ask me and the minimum paid plan is 3$ a month. I would be willing to pay if it was like 1$ like Tutanota's Premium plan. I also know that they had some shady decisions in the past. I am pretty well satisfied with Tutanota. I just wanted to switch to Skiff because at first glance, I thought it was as good as Tutanota and on my Samsung phone, the notifications worked. Whereas Tutanota's became either very delayed or did not come at all. I don't mind checking the Tutanota app every now and then but why should I when notifications are a thing. I sure as hell will switch to a different phone since Samsung seems to be very badly rated in https://dontkillmyapp.com/. Unfortunately, turns out they're US based (big red flag already) and they are hosting their servers in AWS (another big red flag).

The reason Proton is more expensive is because you get access to more of their other services too, like cloud storage, vpn, calendar and now password manager. It's really worth it in my opinion, services are mature and stable. Although not sure what you're referring to with "shady decisions in the past"?

But if all you need is a mail provider then it seems like you're already satisfied enough with Tutanota.

I just made the switch to proton in the last week and so far I'm happy with it, even decided to pay for a year of service. The one feature I'm surprised to see missing from the android app is conversation view. The web app has it, but mobile doesn't. My personal email is very minimal so I don't really care, but for heavy users this might be an issue.

Android is getting a complete rewrite if that's what you're using. Not sure on timeline but it's coming (tm).

Odd because they recently did a huge update to android anyhow. Overall I'm quite happy with it all.

[–] gingerman@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I'm on Android. If you search for this issue, they've been talking about adding conversation view for years. It's currently a non issue for me, just pointing it out for anyone considering the switch

"I also know that they had some shady decisions in the past." I am assuming this is a reference to responding to a legal order to hand over details for a user. Any company would have to do the same. The problem is with the law, not the company.

[–] RandoCalrandian@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

exactly. They lost their warrant canary, but that in and of itself isn't reason enough to abandon the platform or believe it's compromised.

And if legal warrants are your concern, you shouldn't be using a cloud solution at all tbh

It depends on your threat model.

If you need better protection than the average internet citizen, then maybe it's a bad idea to use a US service. Non US citizen don't have the same data protect in the US.

[–] not_a_bot_i_swear@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Kinda old thread but at least now your emails are encrypted at rest. Same as with Proton or Tutanota. Not sure if that was different 3 months ago.

[–] Gargari@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I would stay on Tuta. Skiff's UI is s3xy, but Tuta is better in the matters we are interested

[–] pqpera@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I use it for the fact they got free custom domain emails and that their ceo actually talked about the app on techlore forum + he made lot of progress just to be listed on privacy guides.

They wanted to make me pay because I was inactive for like 6 months. I wouldn’t even consider Tutanota as an option.

[–] survive@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You just have to stay active. Even Google will be deleting inactive Gmail accounts. If you pay Tuta you don’t have to stay active, true, but it’s not the extortion you seem to want it to be. I don’t care if you use it or not but lots of people make this silly claim and it’s never as hard hitting as they think. I’ve paid for Tuta for awhile yet I remain active. It’s almost as if there are other benefits to being a paying customer.

[–] iso@lemy.lol -3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I never seen Google removing accounts. Nor Proton Mail.

I don’t care about downvotes. If I claim an email address there and can’t use it after 6 months, that service is shit. What if I used that email in critical service I needed? At least remove mails but let me use the email. Right now it just like a paywalled blog article.

If free plan is not affordable for your service, just don’t let people to that plan.

[–] marcoedelman@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"I want a free product and impose my own demands. I do not want to abide by their terms for the free service, therefore they are shit."

Honestly, are you hearing yourself? You're not exactly being reasonable here.

[–] iso@lemy.lol -1 points 1 year ago

I’m not demanding anything. At my first comment, i said I disliked their service and don’t advice it.

Like I’m not saying they should add a feature. I’m saying I don’t recommend because they don’t have that feature.

[–] falseteefs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's €3 a month, you must spend more running your lemmy instance right?

[–] iso@lemy.lol 1 points 1 year ago

Its not about money… I pay after using free version for a while. I’m paying Proton Mail and BitWarden for not having bullshit like this.
