I feel like Y should be the successor to X.

[–] fujiwood@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Whyland doesn't sound as good though.

[–] PeleSpirit@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Do you mean like X, Why?, Z

[–] substill@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

You made me check my zipper.

[–] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

[–] aBundleOfFerrets@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

he does NOT get the joke!!!1!!

[–] AffineConnection@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The X window system is actually the successor to the W window system.

[–] red@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

There actually was a short-lived attempt to create a Y window system as a successor to X (before Wayland).

Funnily enough the website is still live, despite no progress in almost 20 years: https://y-windows.org

millenial.com is just a whatsapp call away!

[–] elxeno@lemm.ee 37 points 1 year ago

Help! I'm getting screen tearing in the new twitter!

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, the successor for XCOM is UFO: Alien Invasion.

[–] pelya@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The development had stopped since 2020, you'll have to make do with inferior closed-source commercial clone called XCOM 2.

[–] FellowHuman@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can someone please ELI5 this to me? Everyone seems to get it (as a joke?) but me.

[–] FellowHuman@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Ooh, it's the logo, god damn it, got it 2 secconds after posting this.

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 49 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Just in case anyone else stumbles across this and is confused, I'll explain in more detail.

On Linux there are two display server protocols, the very old X11 and the newer Wayland, which was designed as a successor to X11 by its maintainers.

Elon Musk announced today that he is renaming Twitter to X (yes, just X). The above posts takes the mick out of this on this by announcing a social media website called Wayland, i.e. the successor to Musk's X.

To expand, one of his early businesses was X.com which was a payment processor and sold to paypal and eventually shutdown. He bought the domain again back in 2017 and it now redirects to twitter.

[–] june@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He’s also been wanting to name something X for a while. When Ford wouldn’t let him name the Model 3 the Model X (so his cars would spell SEX) he must have sat on his laurels until he had a brain aneurysm big enough to make him think it’s a good idea to dump the Twitter brand for a math problem.

[–] TableCoffee@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Isn't it that he wanted model E but that's the one Ford wouldn't allow? Because there is a Tesla model X. He wanted to spell SEXY but instead he now has S3XY.

[–] june@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Ah yea, that’s right. I misremembered.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Talk about callbacks...

[–] hazeebabee@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 year ago

Thank you, this is just the kind of thorough explination i needed to understand this meme lol

[–] vicfic@iusearchlinux.fyi 2 points 1 year ago

Ooooh, it's toasting elmo's x. Thanks for clearing that up 😃.

[–] Noughmad@programming.dev 16 points 1 year ago

It's not just the logo, the domain name is extremely similar too (x.com vs x.org).

Big brands like to own all variants of their domain (so you can't register google.org or facebook.net, for example). But X can't do that.

[–] arkannon@iusearchlinux.fyi 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ahhh I can see the graphical glitches already

[–] mrquantumoff@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

on X.com, I presume (that's where I get them)

[–] Vilian@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

i don't get them, the delay is enough to make them disappear, my desktop too, but the glithes are gone :b

[–] yesimprogun@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Like Weyland-Yutani?

Dammit for some reason I thought this was some kind of rare, unknown game cover for a game called XCOM Enemy.
