News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

After checking the achievement notification, I was presented with this:

Context: I still have an account after using PDS to alter/remove all my posts and wiping my profile, but I still get messages from redditors seeking help so I check in from time to time.

Reddit sucks yes but lemmy it's hard to find tech support.

My account there still exists for a couple of reasons.

One, so that nobody else uses my name there. Two, so that all my comments still say "Spez doesn't get to profit from me anymore." Three, since I rarely go there at all, and then only to read something, never to actually interact, that should fuck with their metrics.

After deleting your account, nobody can ever use that username again. (Including yourself)

For point 2, I'm not sure how you mean that but when you delete your account, it doesn't delete your posts and comments.

I think their metrics showing people are deleting their accounts might be more impactful, because there are probably loads of unused accounts naturally.

Spez doesn't get to profit from me anymore

Spez already profited from you, OpenAI already scraped all of Reddit's content to feed ChatGPT

... anymore

It's kind of ok as a news aggregator, especially for non-US news. The comments have long gone to hell, however. I stop reading threads after encountering the 10th or so "/s", which usually happens a few seconds in.

Yes, m*stly through Apollo which has a tweak so it still works (that's right, I jailbreak in 2024)

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee -4 points 2 weeks ago

Dark patterns will eventually force advertisements into anything that reliably catches your attention.

I stopped paying attention to notification icons ages ago, and I haven't missed any important notifications.

[–] emb@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yep. Not even always ads exactly, but just dummy notifications to make your dumb brain keep opening the app or website (which is kind of a self ad).

Most apps I have to disable or heavily tone down notifications in some way to get them to stop yapping about nothing. Even then, sometimes you can't get notifications you do want without junk.

Funny, this week, I got an email notice of a question (can you link the probiotic you use?) from something I commented ( I use Lactobacillus salivarius to promote good oral microflora, and am not selling a particular brand of probiotic) on Red about 9 years ago. My first thought was go look it up yourself, and with this post realize that it's part of Red't's plan to lure us back in. lol, not gonna happen. I've been ignoring FB lures far longer, and know how to not play your game.

Wow, looks like the facebook tactics are creeping in. Fb started notifying users to pull them back on the platform with "x person commented on y person's post (that you've never interacted with)", and half the time those notifications didn't link to the post, and you couldn't turn them off. I'm not sure how that brings people back at all.

[–] God_Is_Love@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

Also if I check my feed it's at least half "suggested posts" from subs I'm not subscribed to, which really seems to defeat the purpose of what people liked about Reddit in the first place. Not that I like them anymore anyways but it's amazing how much they can continue to self destruct the user experience

Before I was randomly permabanned from Reddit, I got to enjoy Reddit's dogshit post notifications, where it just recommends me a random post from a community that I've never interacted with or will ever, then come to realise it just brings me to the community, not the post.

Honestly I'm so glad I got banned from that shithole, from the pedo dms to the always pissed off Redditors replying to my comments, to the absolute neckbeard degenerates in the comment sections, it's so freeing not experiencing that anymore.
