The Story of the 1933 Italy UFO/UAP Crash-Recovery That Shaped the 20th Century

On July 26, 2023, following a blockbuster interview between journalist Ross Coulthart and former US intelligence officer-turned-UFO/UAP whistleblower David Grusch in early June, the United States Congress held its first-ever historic hearing on the UFO/UAP topic since 1966. During the hearing, Grusch, alongside US Navy pilots David Fravor and Ryan Graves, testified about the existence of UFOs/UAP and a non-human intelligence that the US military and intelligence agencies have been aware of since the 1940s.

In that initial interview with Ross Coulthart, among other explosive testimony by Grusch regarding multiple UAP and their “pilots” and “biologics” having been recovered for decades in secret by the US government, he referenced one case that he was cleared by the Pentagon to speak about via their Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review process, or DOPSR, was that of a craft recovered in Magenta, Italy in 1933, just outside of Milan. In his statements, he went on to talk about how the crash-retrieval was studied by the Italians under Mussolini and then the Germans before the Vatican took control of it and ensured that it got into the hands of the United States towards the end of WWII.

The story of the crash-recovery in Italy 1933 came as a shock even to those who’d been paying deep attention to the UFO subject for years. Ever since the sighting in June 1947 by pilot Kenneth Arnold flying near Mt Rainier added the phrase “flying saucer” to our lexicon, the topic has been one of keen fascination for the public around the world. But for as much as stories like Roswell and Area 51 are plenty familiar, and movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. are among the most successful of all time, the case of the Magenta craft had never been really talked about in circles well-familiar with the UFO/UAP subject. Grusch testified that documents from that era had been recently declassified, essentially begging researchers to start digging in to piece this narrative together.

In 1996, Roberto Pinotti, one of Italy’s leading UFO/UAP researchers, anonymously received three previously-unseen telegram messages in the mail that were sent directly by Mussolini on June 13, 1933. Pinotti had these documents studied, and in 2000, he presented them to the public as having been authenticated. Those documents state, in short:

Guglielmo Marconi

Nobel Price-winning Italian scientist who invented radio in 1897, won the Nobel in 1909 with Karl Ferdinand Braun “in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy.” When the Magenta UFO/UAP is recovered by Mussolini, Marconi is tasked with studying as part of the secret RS33, or Special Research group 33, by another Italian Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Enrico Fermi, famous for coining the Fermi Paradox, essentially asking “where is everybody?” in light of the vastness of the Universe.

His work laid the foundation for the development of radio, television, and all modern wireless communication systems.[10]

Marconi was also an entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in the United Kingdom in 1897 (which became the Marconi Company). In 1929, Marconi was ennobled as a Marchese (marquis) by King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, and, in 1931, he set up Vatican Radio for Pope Pius XI.

In 1934, he tested his “death ray,” the original electro-magnetic pulse weapon that was quoted as having shut down the car of Mussolini’s wife and many others one afternoon on a busy road and was touted as being able to stop aircraft. This “death ray” made worldwide news, and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini asked Marconi for the device, but at the behest of the Vatican, the deeply Catholic Marconi did not want it used for nefarious means and refused to hand it over.

According to David Grusch, the Magenta UAP crash-retrieval was a major reason for Italy aligning with Germany in the Axis power. The day the Magenta craft was recovered, issued a memo ordering complete silence on the retrieval. Initially believed the craft was of German origin and brought the Germans in who said it wasn’t.

Galeazzo Ciano

Son-in-law and second-in-command to Mussolini, serving as Foreign Minister from 1936–1943, when In July 1943, Ciano was among the members of the Grand Council of Fascism that forced Mussolini’s ousting and subsequent arrest. Ciano proceeded to flee to Germany but was arrested and handed over to Mussolini’s new regime based in Salò, the Italian Social Republic. Mussolini ordered Ciano’s death, and in January 1944 he was executed by firing squad.[3]

Ciano wrote and left behind a diary[4] that has been used as a source by several historians, including William Shirer in his The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (1960)[5] and in the four-hour HBO documentary-drama Mussolini and I (1985).

According to the CIA, the Ciano Diaries were considered the most important item at the end of WWII. After Ciano’s execution, his wife, Edda Ciano, smuggled his diaries out of Italy and delivered them to OSS member and future CIA head Allen Dulles in Switzerland in exchange for safe passage. The diaries are considered to contain the most insight regarding the relationship between Italy and Germany during WWII. The missing pages of these diaries are considered one of the last pieces of this UFO/UAP crash-retrieval puzzle.
