And if the end-result it just wood fibre pulp, why not just grow woody scrubs in plantations?

Can't we use a fast growing plant like bamboo?
Bamboo is a type of giant grass that isn't composed quite the same way as regular wood.
Bummer.
If the goal is fiber production, rather than going through the expensive chemical mess of turning lignin into rayon we could just… grow fiber? Hemp and linen make excellent fast growing, long staple, durable fibers that require minimal processing.
