Threads is just another threat to privacy

[–] Marxine@lemmy.world 37 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tbh the biggest threat is Meta's ability to manipulate public opinion. They've used it to great lenghts to make the world a worse place.

[–] harry_assman@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Valid and very good point here!

[–] SnowFoxx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

And another threat to the fediverse. The article linked here describes very well, what could happen next.

[–] mrpaw69@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

And that’s why I won’t install it ever. Just like other Meta products. I also will delete Reddit soon(I moved to Lemmy from there)

[–] liontigerwings@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Except threads already has 4x more users than mastadon.

[–] tymon@lemm.ee 53 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's because Threads' entire userbase is baked into an app that almost everyone already has. It says absolutely nothing about the quality or featureset of the app, much less scalability and actual use.

[–] mochi@lemdit.com 40 points 1 year ago (1 children)

From personal use, I can tell you that the featureset is just not there. You can't even sort by followed accounts only, or get chronological updates. It's a hot turd sandwich.

[–] DrQuint@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Honestly, in the day and age, removing follows and chronological feeds sounds like an intentional move.

Consume more algorithm. Curate less content.

10 years ago YouTube was already fucking with subscriptions. We lost access to the History page on THREE separate occasions. I did not forget and it was just a sign of things to come. Every time I see anything come closer to resemble that kind of move, I always, always, assume wickedness rather than ineptitude.

[–] SnowFoxx@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I doubt they really have. Meta just imported all Instagram accounts into Threads and at the same time made it impossible to delete your new account, without deleting yours on Instagram as well.

[–] Dubois_arache@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 year ago

Creating high numbers...

[–] madeindjs@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

I guess many people created an account to try but we need to wait to see the number of user stabilize.

Also, it seems the only way to emove your Threads account is to remove your instagram account ...

Zucks poor attempt to connect his Meta bullshit with the fediverse. It's desired to be a Twitter replacement which uses the ActivityPub-Protocol and therefore is able to communicate with fediverse instances (which use the same protocol). So basically it's the same as Mastodon, just with Zucks closed source corporate crap.

[–] Radioaktvt@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Which is a way I’m assuming to data mine every user on the fediverse. Safe to say that anyone that connects to the fediverse via Threads will essentially expose all Non Threads user to the Meta data miners?

[–] TimeIncarnate@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, that’s not how it works at all. All of your public posts are already public anyway, Threads doesn’t need to be involved for literally anyone to go through all of your posts right now.

[–] SnowFoxx@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

That's true, but why should they be happy with your posts only, if they can also make you pay (with your data, for Threads users) for services, which were always free at Mastodon?!

[–] mochi@lemdit.com 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's pretty clever, though, isn't it? On Zuckerberg's part.

[–] FoxBJK@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

I get what you mean but I’m not sure how clever it really is to just copy the old EEE strategy from Microsoft.

All I think of when I see the name, apart from Meta and Zuchbot 3000, is nuclear war and a woman pissing herself. Still undecided as to which is worse.

[–] SnowFoxx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Zuchbot 3000

Haha, that's a good one xD

[–] echoplex21@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’m actually enjoying talking to people I know on Threads ngl. I can’t wait till they bring fediverse support and I can talk to them through Mastodon (the less info I give them directly the better).

[–] MeetInPotatoes@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We're all deciding what to do with you right now. Tyrael has the deciding vote.

[–] echoplex21@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Hahaha, if it makes you feel better, I’ll most likely just abandon Threads after they integrate with ActivityPub. It will be nice to talk to my friends in a Twitter type environment as no one really used Mastadon let alone Twitter.

[–] FoxBJK@midwest.social 4 points 1 year ago

**<gives honest opinion on something, gets downvoted>

I agree, honestly. Most of my friends will never be interested in something like Mastadon. I’d have to talk to them via Facebook anyhow, and I’m interested to see how this plays out.
