/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Many years ago, Penn and Teller put out a book called Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends, and in it, they talk about the game they play when they're in a movie theater. I can't remember all of the rules, but the two I remember are that you applaud any time they say the name of the movie in the movie and if you see a bald character, you shout, "BALD!"

I imagine Penn must do the shouting for both of them.

When they came out with their movie, Penn and Teller Get Killed, I remember being really disappointed when Teller talked. It's a bit silly to think about now, being disappointed that he did something he obviously did when he wasn't on-stage or on-camera anyway.

Shortly before that, both Penn and Teller had small voice-over roles in the English dub of the French animated film Gandahar (rechristened Light Years in the U.S. for some reason) and Teller was just credited as Teller. The filmmaker, Rene Laloux, also made Fantastic Planet, aka La Planete Sauvage. I highly recommend both if you haven't seen either.

I love deep nerd dives like this. Thanks, Flying Squid.

I used to do their "fork in the eye" trick at restaurants all the time.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I did too! Scared the hell out of a Denny's waitress.

Care to explain what it is and how it works. I'm quite curious now. ^^

You surrepetitiously palm a liquid creamer container, then at the appropriate moment, draw attention to youself with a fork. Hold the palmed creamer up to your eye, pretend to puncture your eye with the fork, but actually puncture the creamer. Squeeze.

Instructions unclear, punctured my eye anyways

Perfect, thank you. Next time someone insists on meeting me in a restaurant, I might just do that. I tend to create my own fun when I'm in places I don't like.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 5 points 3 months ago

Just know that it is a very messy trick.

Sounds like the boring sober version of a drinking game

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Wasn't the star trek explanation that in the future, people don't care about baldness and are beyond vanity? Then why is captain Pike's hair so damn fly?

[–] PrimeMinisterKeyes@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Oh is that so?

"Thank you, Dr. Obvious."
