You can configure Krunner to not use some services that may be causing tthe lag.
It's superfast in my machine.
Also, I think the first launch is the most problematic, so try to launch the background service at start, there must be some tutorials on this.
In any case, Krunner is not supposed to be a key-combo launcher. It's a search engine. Use shortcuts for opening your most used apps.

To be honest it should work even with lag. If I type firefox then never ever should files be selected, it's just crazy to me. Maybe I should report this as a bug, I'm sure it's easily fixed.
The new cache-to-RAM improvements in Plasma 6.1 will help a lot.
Then, for plasma search, you can configure the placement of the results in systemsettings. This is also Plasma 6 only afaik

Well if I type "discord" then "discover" is an incorrect result, imo.

Here the search is so quick, that on "dis" is already has results. But then the delay to search again is too high.

I followed the advice of another user and disabled some of the search options and its super fast now and should probably fix my issue. I still went ahead and reported this as a bug though
@PotatoesFall for me the discover/discord combination is especially painful. Didn't find anything with a quick search
