The contest from last month had established five finalists:

The first row is the new logo that will be used going forward and in version 1.0 of the program!

They already settled with the first logo form the image. They use it on their site and on their Mastodon presence already.

From the available finalists this is the best logo in my opinion. It is recognizable in various sizes, in black and white, as outline, as silhouette, and looks different from the previous one but not wildly different, so the established CI stays intact.

They should update the lemmy community too...

[–] zksmk@slrpnk.net 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Done. It should take a while to propagate to every instance.

Keep in mind tho, this is an unofficial community.

this is an unofficial community

Have you been following any of the discussions regarding potential issues with the administration and moderation on ml?

Might we consider moving the community to a less politically charged instance?

Can't say I have.

However, I originally made this community back in the day when lemmy.ml was basically the only instance, and have since then moved my account to another instance (2 years ago) specifically for those same reasons of lemmy.ml being... hmm.. politically charged.

I didn't think of moving the community until now tbh, but that's not really something I can do. At most I could sticky a link to another community, or delete this one (which would be overkill imo), but for that to happen there needs to be a different community to begin with and community interest for it to happen. The power's all yours people. It's up to you guys to show interest and initiative. Maybe make a post about this, and check if there's interest, discuss where to move etc, a meta post like this is totally fine here on /c/freecad.

Anyway, on a completely unrelated note, the community image did update after awhile, but in the wrong direction! It was the new logo on slrpnk.net/c/freecad@lemmy.ml for awhile, where my account is, but now I see that when the things synced the old lemmy.ml/c/freecad image overwrote the new one on slrpnk.net/c/freecad@lemmy.ml! I guess I can't change the image as a mod from another instance. I will have to mod my old lemmy.ml account here now to change the image (and hopefully it will stick this time around, assuming it works at all) but I will have to make a bug report on github about this when I find the time.

Sorry for the late reply tho.

Yeah, there have been some... issues lately.

Instead of deleting it, you could lock the community so only moderators could post, and have a stickied post directing people to the new community on a different instance. I think that @Blaze@reddthat.com has had some success with this approach in the past.

Not sure what the best instance would be though... maybe programming.dev?

FreeCAD is an amazing project, going at a pace similar to Blender some years ago. I foresee a bright future for it! All hail FreeCAD!

This is exciting. A much needed revamp of the FreeCAD icon.

The icon is modern and pleasing. However, I liked the late submission much more actually. Still great though.

I dig how it’s like formed out of sheet metal and is in isometric view. Definitely the best of the logos by far

I really want to love this software to break free of Solidworks and completely cut off Windows. That said, the UI needs some kind of overhaul to be a little more beginner friendly. I spent way too much time just trying to make a washer for a simple print. Are there any mods I can try to get it closer to work like Solidworks?

Ooh, looks interesting. I'm coming from SolidWorks as well. This looks like a fork of a fork? How stable is it?

[–] Shimon@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I've been using it for a while now and to mee it seems as stable as FreeCAD itself. It only crashes when I do something very complicated on my old laptop.

[–] threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Thanks for the recommendation. What do you prefer about it over basic FreeCAD or RealThunder? How close is it to Solidworks? Does it include the concept of "rollback"?

[–] darkphotonstudio@beehaw.org 4 points 6 months ago

There's a fork call Ondsel that is supposed to be quite good: https://ondsel.com/

FreeCAD is amazing! I've used it to design and print several small parts for my car, and some other things.

I'm very excited to see developments in this, and I hope it reaches the Blender mythic for modeling. ❤️

Definitely would be nice to have a competitive alternative to softwares in this space that cost thousands of dollars per year.

[–] Krafting@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

The choosen logo looks really good! I also like the square un red too, but the first one keep the Freecad branding better !

[–] abfarid@startrek.website 4 points 6 months ago

While not being clear enough what it's for, that last Rotom-Pokedex-esque logo looks very nice.

[–] vikingtons@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Looks lovely! Well done to them!
