I've been using many apps and from few months, It's seems I'm quite stable so I think it's time to share a list of awesome Android Apps I'm using everyday as I've removed Google from my life!

List is very similar to mine. And I finally killed the last leg I had on Google, which was my Google Fi service, ported over to a VOIP service, and deleted that account as well. The future is bright.

My last Google service used was Goolge Domain, but I'm free now :๐ŸŽ‰ I'm thinking about what to do with my Google account for two main reasons, I have possibly missed a service still using my gmail email... And about warranty with my Pixel as I bought it from Google directly.

[โ€“] jjlinux@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

About the warranty on your device, just wait for it to expire. After so much time using Google, keeping the account alive for whatever you need for a bit longer won't really make a difference.

What I would do is just keep it and not use it for anything other than what I REALLY need it for.

It's exactly what I'm thinking, I can just use it to buy the Pixel 12 or 13 in few years and not use the account.

And about the warranty, in fact it's really what making me buy on Google my Pixel. I changed my Pixel 3XL for a Pixel 5 so I give the 3XL to a friend, warranty was expired since few years but he had a problem with the battery, they changed the phone for free. Best customer service ever... I don't like Google anymore but I can admit there is some good in it... I think!

What I do is get it from a brick and mortar store, like Best Buy, or even order from them. I'll avoid buying from Google directly like the plague. I am aware they share some information, but just not paying Google directly feels good to me.

And about their customer service, honor where honor is due, they are awesome at that. When I was leaving Fi, not even a single attempt to keep me there, no questions, just a fully helpful individual helping me port out.

Odd phone choice for degoogling

[โ€“] KISSmyOSFeddit@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Unfortunately the Pixel is the best phone for degoogling with the widest support of alternative ROMs.
The irony of giving money to Google in order to degoogle is pretty harsh.

I'd always shop used for that through a reputable resale store with quality assurance.

Just buy a used one. It's good for the environment and you don't give money to Google

meh, they'll learn that we like their hardware and their OS, but not their spyware. If everyone does that, you'll see next thing they do is start cutting down the spying.

[โ€“] Longmactoppedup@aussie.zone 2 points 5 months ago

I fear they will go the other way, that is start locking down the pixels to make replacing their OS more difficult.

That's next level optimism.

Pretty good list. I'd just add molly instead of signal.

[โ€“] darkham@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

I've tried few years ago but there was some battery issues and notifications issues at this time, I could take an other look if it has improve at these points.

Fairemail (https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail) is an excellent email app alternative. With a responsive dev too

[โ€“] darkham@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

It was my email client until I discovered K-9 Mail, and yes excellent email app.

Syncathing-fork supposedly fixes some issues.

I use Tracker Control to lockdown PlsyStore apps. Instead of ad block.

With mull an tubular I being see ads on my phone anyway.
