Reddit didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. According to Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, “We’ll no longer comment on hearsay, unsubstantiated claims, or baseless accusations from The Verge. We’ll be in touch as corrections are needed.” In the absence of corrections, then, you can assume Reddit believes none are necessary.

Gold.

Now they antagonize the press as well? Noice.

Well, I mean, they disagreed with them... :p it seems to be the reddit inc way of doing things.

The mod’s post also announced a vast number of changes to the subreddit’s rules that hew more closely to Reddit’s general requirements, while also undoing many of the norms and rule tweaks that were in place to improve the quality of content. The changes include no longer requiring users to do basic research and lowering the standard for what the subreddit counts as spam. Reddit has its reopened community, but at what cost?

Looks like Reddit's cunning plan is to compete with Quora.

Response: "You must be possessed by a demon, you poor, miserable sinner. In order to cleanse yourself of its dark energies you should surround your bed with cleansing crystals and give yourself wholly to Christ and repent."

Reddit burning itself to the ground is the best thing to happen to the Internet in a long time. Just look at how decentralized communities are flourishing.

@ardi60

a mod said that fears of Reddit actions forced the team’s hand: “We’re re-opening because if we don’t, the mods that Reddit appoint may not care about the subreddit the way we do,”

What in the Stockholm Syndrome is that? Do these people have any dignity?

[–] TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org 40 points 1 year ago

Do these people have any dignity?

Hey, I don't know if you mean it that way but this is a pretty unkind thing to say. I suspect that a lot of these mods are folks that have spent a good bit of time and effort trying to build up communities that they care about.

You may think that the platform that they've chosen to do that on is working against them (and I agree), but I don't think that what they are feeling is contemptible in any way.

[–] meggied90@vlemmy.net 15 points 1 year ago

Maybe more of a sunk cost fallacy? They've invested hours of labor in maintaining their community, to suddenly give that up and let some bootlicker take over feels like admitting all that work was for nothing.

That kind of dedication would be welcome over here though! I hope they find their way here.

Yeah this really put me off. It's so sad. I agree with the other comment that this that it's some sunk cost fallacy.

[–] Domiku@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

That’s how I feel at this point. There are alternatives!

I really like the punchy end to this article.

I was only a mod briefly (basically created it as a honeypot for mods I thought would be good), but given my actual career, if I were 10 to 15 years (or even more) into it and faced with this bullshit, it might be worth riding it out and then watching it die. External force saying it's time to move on.

[–] Scooter411@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

Thats… super shitty. I know the mods love what they built, but it’s time to ditch out. Reddit will keep enforcing more and more rules on them and completely ruin anything they have left.

[–] JWBananas@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm surprised none of them have just set AutoModerator to remove every new post.

[–] Timwi@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

That would be easier for Reddit to just undo. It's more effective to just not moderate at all and show Reddit what happens when anyone can post anything.

[–] LoafyLemon@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I hope it's just a smokescreen until 1st July...
