Also Idle champions of the forgotten realm, but that was already free...is this the first time that Epic has 'given' away an already free game?

It's not the first time that a game is a freebie for a second time. You can see the history of free games here: https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-games-store-free-games-list/

The Hunter: Call of the Wild was also free previously, around December 2021.

It's also not the first time that a free game is "given away", but usually it means that it's some in-game purchase / DLC that is free. I think that's the case with Idle Champions as well but I haven't played it to confirm !

How come? I don't see Epic as any different than Steam or Origin.
