The move reduces Prescott’s salary cap number to $55.455M, while two extra void years were added to the deal for cap purposes (void years now through 2028).

This does not prevent the team and Prescott from further negotiating a long-term extension, but provides Dallas with immediate salary cap relief.

If anyone else is like me and wondering how this works, I found a good article from 2021 that explains how they can do this by adding voidable years to the contract.

Basically, if I'm understanding this properly, Dak signed a new contract for basically the same pay. This allowed them to give a signing bonus which would be spread out over the course of the contract. By adding void years to the contract they can spread it out even thinner each year. So, instead of taking a $5 million hit this year for the roster bonus, they can spread it out to $1 million a year over 5 years, with 2 of those years being void years. Then with some clever accounting they can make the hit only $4 million in the long run. This also requires Dak to trust that they will give him a new contract before those void years.

At least that's what I was able to surmise. If anyone sees I interpreted any part of that wrong please let me know.
