After spending a few minutes, it seems like a mix of mastodon/twitter/reddit. I don't think it'll take the place of lemmy/kbin

I don't have a high opinion of this.

What has Jimmy Wales been doing recently?

  1. Losing a bunch of money creating WikiTribune
  2. Pivoting that failed venture to WT Social. Quote, "However, as of November 7, 2019, Wales stated that he had just learnt about ActivityPub and was looking into it." It took him four years to get around to it?
  3. Just now taking advantage of us to start yet another social media network. And what does he do first thing? Ask for donations.

Yeah I'm not going anywhere near there.

the guy famous for his non-profit organisation* asking for donations and losing money on his projects is an extremely weird thing to have an issue with

when the first topic in the "Serious Stuff" is "US politics", you know it's yet another US-centered thing. getting tired of this navel-gazing.

any english speaking social media site is going to have a heavy US focus

theyve got about 5 times the population of the next biggest english speaking country, its pretty unavoidable

The good old "Make viewers furious so they create an account to be able to reply".

"Look at the disgusting things De Santis is doing! Click here to register"

It’s too late Jimmy. The time to start on a viable Reddit alternative was more than a year ago. People looking for other options have already found them.

As an active Wikipedian, Vulcan sincerely doubt that this Jimbo's attempt will be successful at all. An ActivePub support will be welcome however.

His track record with social media isn't encouraging.

They're planning to support ActivityPub, so sounds good to me.

[–] Kaldo@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah not sure what's with all the negativity, having more options is always a good thing - even if it sucks and fails eventually there could still be lessons learned from it, or help with the overall adoption and better understanding of AP.

With all due respect to Jimmy Wales, his social media efforts have not done well at all. WT.social bombed pretty quickly after it launched in 2019, and a quick look at Trust Cafe shows it woefully behind kbin and lemmy in basic functionality. I don't have high hopes for this one.

It looks like nobody remembers TPO, Jimmy Wales' attemp to create a social network

[–] tegs_terry@feddit.uk 3 points 1 year ago

He says it's gonna be federated eventually so I guess it's just another option. Nice to have a selection.

I created an account and nothing loaded but the FAQs suggests an interesting concept. It’s almost like a wiki Reddit where people should be able to correct and edit other posts and comments. Not sure how it would work practically but I would be very curious to see what happens

I created an account and nothing loaded

I've been navigating without an account and found 9 months old posts

We're sorry but A non-toxic social experience doesn't work properly without JavaScript enabled. Please enable it to continue.

HAHAHA hahaha , lol... omg okay bye.

Thank you for your trust, trustcafe.io.

Im on it and like the 2.0 look of wiki tribune. They are still figuring out some things but it has great promise. Right now a discussion is going on features like branching. That being said I have not been able to login since the weekend and hit the contact to let them know but I have not gotten a response. Yes I cleared cookies and tried incognito.
