Just in case you didn't know ... she's on mastodon, has probably been here longer than you, and is active (she once actually replied to me!!!!!).

Does an admin or something want to make "first contact"?

She probably doesn't know this place or lemmy exists, and if she wants to post here, like all mastodon users, could maybe do with a pointer or two (but also a warning about following this community unless she's ok with a firehose on her feed, which she might be).

Things will be easier if and when Mastodon launches group support, I imagine. However they do it - separate timeline for groups, or actual full group support - will make groups way less spammy for Masto users.

Maybe wait until that happens to reach out. Or just warn against subscribing.

@maegul

I'm on the techy side of the spectrum, and I find the mastodon-lemmy interaction a bit of a challenge. It's a multi step process with some "Where am I?!" moments sprinkled in. The process will have to be streamlined for people that don't find computers fun.

[–] V699@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

this is why I like kbin. it's the best features of mastodon and lemmy

[–] Kichae@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

On Mastodon, groups just look like spammy users (they boost every message they're mentioned in, and any post to a Lemmy group or kbin magazine silently mentions the group), so if people are already comfortable over there, it's not that big of a deal to interact with here.

It's just noisy.

It seems that many Star Trek authors, writers, and producers etc. set up Mastodon accounts when then expected to be leaving Twitter.

Some of those accounts are being kept semi active but don’t have active followers. I understand that following a Mastodon account from Lemmy isn’t as feasible as the other way. I’m wondering if those members might be more active if they knew there was a community here that’s interested to engage.

All to say that it would be great if

— we could have guidance on how to follow them from here if possible (rather than creating separate Mastodon accounts;

—the mods here could message them to let them know there’s a new and active community here interested to engage.

A couple of thoughts on this:

  1. I don't think it's possible to follow Mastodon accounts through Lemmy - at least not yet. To be honest, though, after playing with their interoperability, in my opinion it's best to just set up a Mastodon account and use it as a separate platform. The formats are different enough that you'll be grateful for the more Twitter-like UI experience.

  2. I'm personally not big on messaging actors or other series personnel without a very specific reason. These are personal social media accounts, and not everyone appreciates extra "noise" in their feed. Those who are interested will likely find out about us organically, and we would always reach out if the timing seemed right and we thought they would be receptive.

For me the lack of desire to interact in that way means that it would be convenient if I could follow certain mastodon accounts through lemmy, but because I have no desire to microblog or attempt to interact with celebrities, in turn, I have no desire to set up a mastodon account just to lurk a few accounts

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, I have no idea if that's being actively developed, but it should be at least theoretically possible.

[–] Commod0re@startrek.website 1 points 1 year ago

If it never works out I’ll live, it would be neat if it happens eventually though :D

[–] lxskllr@mastodon.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@Commod0re @ValueSubtracted

I'm following lemmy through mastodon cause it suits me atm. You may find mastodon more interesting than you think. I've never been on twitter, and never will be, but I'm *very* enthusiastic about federation, and putting control in the hands of users, hence my account. While I'd like more varied content, atm, it's basically a Trek machine to me. I've met cool people, and seen cool things over the last few months. I'm pleased with my "purchase".

[–] Commod0re@startrek.website 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s not that I wouldn’t find any of the content interesting, I just don’t feel like contributing on that kind of platform. Something about it just doesn’t appeal to me enough. It’s tough to nail down a concrete explanation of why exactly, yelling into the void just doesn’t do it for me. I prefer this more forum-like format where there’s space to be thoughtful and wordy in between the spicy space memes

Because of that, it would be neat if I could aggregate more Trek content into my life by following some accounts, but if I have to create another account and visit another separate website in order to do that I’ll have to pass, at least for now

[–] lxskllr@mastodon.world 2 points 1 year ago

@Commod0re
Yea, I completely get that. If twitter hadn't gone off the rails first, I might be in exactly your position. I wasn't a big reddit user. In 11 years, I generated about 3k comments(I know this cause I edited them all last night). What I really like are old school forums, but they've fallen out of favor. This place is pretty cool though, and I'm here to stay, if not prolific. My reddit account will be nuked at month's end. Just waiting to see if more stuff returns to edit.

[–] mle86@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Another option is to use kbin.social, which lets you access both, lemmy as well as mastodon from one single account and user interface

[–] Marks@esq.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@mle86 @ValueSubtracted How does kbin handle posts from mastodon? I cannot seem to find a federated feed list there.

[–] mle86@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

To be honest, I'm not sure either, I'm new to this as well.

Under search you can enter their mastodon handle, which will then pull up the mastodon profile. From there you can follow, but I can't figure out where the posts show up either. I thought it wouls be in the "people" menu, but that seems to only pull up a selection of peoples profiles.

From.what I read in other comments, it should be possible though.

[–] Sh4d0w_H34rt@geddit.social 6 points 1 year ago

As well as Anthony Rapp @albinokid@nerdculture.de

Robert Duncan McNeil @robertdmcneill@mastodon.world

George Takei @georgetakei@universeodon.com

Most aren't as active as Jeri Ryan though.

[–] Admin@startrek.website 4 points 1 year ago

/r/StarTrek had a Wiki page for Twitter accounts of Trek actors and writers, perhaps when our wiki is up and running we can maintain a list of production folk on the Fediverse.

@maegul here's a link for kbin users.

And I think this is the global link format:: @JeriLRyan but does that alert her? I'm still so new to all of this,

[–] Redhotkurt@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Qapla'! I'm a Kbinner using Kbin, both of those links work for me. This is really cool, until now I haven't followed anyone on the Fediverse, and now my firsts are Takei, Ryan, and McNeill. Thank you maegul and JustinFTL for the info!

[–] maegul@startrek.website 1 points 1 year ago

Generally any platform will have a way to work out what to do with the direct link that goes straight to the original instance of a user of their post, which is why that's what I provided.
