Have you tried leaving a space after your username? e.g. "blindbunny "? I know it sounds dumb but i had a similar issue on one account and i realized that the website auto added a space when i signed in. I assume the same thing must've happened when i signed up and i didn't notice.

my password has the special characters [$,_,!]

The app doesn't actually show the full username unlike the web UI, you have to tap on the user's username to lead you to his profile, where, yes, it does show the instance on which the user has registered (the domain name).
