The old street car suburbs in America were way better. They're almost indistinguishable now from city centers, as they've mostly been annexed by their parent cities.

That's a little cherry picked. This varies wildly in the US. Just out of the half dozen neighborhoods I've lived in: outside of school being distant all but one neighborhoods had everything else within walking/biking distance. Of the neighborhoods people I know live in (another dozen) again there's really only one that stands out and there is a convenience store and school within walking distance.
