Zuckerberg seeks to place responsibility onto Apple and Google for underage social media use::Apple and Google, not social media companies, should be responsible for checking users’ ages to ensure they are not underage, Zuckerberg told lawmakers, suggesting it would be “trivial” for Congress to design legislation regulating app store owners.

So we've reached the point where the web doesn't exist anymore in the general opinion, it's just wall gardened apps now ? 🙁 #web4.0

For the average user, might as well. Most people don't use PCs in casual settings and most Android phones come with Facebook preinstalled.

Especially in developing countries. A lot of people there have literally never experienced the open web.

They're all to blame and parents.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

It‘s very depressing how everyone keeps shifting the blame instead of doing something. Even law makers abuse the topic of child safety to end internet privacy.

how could you allow the children to use the thing that I made?

Jesus fuckin christ he is such a psychopath

I feel the worst outcome of this will be mandated age verification on every website. I really hope the EFF is ready to fight like hell.

I agree with you but there's simple no way they can really check age on internet, because if they make verification by government documents (id) on international websites, then they basically geoblock most of the world out, in other words it'll be another clownery by big tech and i hope too that there'll be enough outrage for big tech to back off

Fuckass forgot that PCs are still a thing, huh?

[–] tooclose104@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 months ago

Browsers on phones too so access is already outside the app store

How about making companies stop pre-loading this shitty meta bloatware on every piece of hardware in circulation?

There is absolutely no reason I should have this shit stuck on my phone and default loaded onto windows. Hot garbage.

Wouldn't it be awesome to buy something and have full control of it

[–] BoringHusband@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

Yes. Apple and Google should ban the Facebook app.

[–] GilgameshCatBeard@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The problem with smart people is that they seem to think everyone else is too dumb to catch them doing stupid shit.

Everyone knows the median age on Facebook is 55 so he's got a point there

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

But not Instagram

If we had a good DID using SSI wallets, it would not be that privacy invasive.
