Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

What do you think?

No. I don't want to go anywhere near that company.

[–] amortized_cost@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

HARD PASS

I don't even have meta/ig account

[–] liam@mastodon.gruezi.net 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

@cih Definitely won't join myself, but I could totally see it being something that my friends who have been more hesitant to try the Fediverse might be willing to use/a first step to pull them in

[–] retnuh@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not, Facebook is one of the worst big tech companies out there.

[–] noodlejetski@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

no, and I hope the Fediverse will defederate from them. judging by the discussion I've seen so far though, it's not likely to happen.

[–] citrixscu@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Not a chance.

don't use twitter, facebook, or instagram, so...

[–] skillful_garbage@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Fuck that. I'm sure it'll be at least somewhat popular, especially if they push it in the Instagram app. When I use Twitter though, it's for shameful doomscrolling that never lasts long; it makes me feel like an addict who just relapsed

[–] poiy@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not, the decline of online communication really started to go berserk with Facebook. Now it’s all just extremists that can’t handle criticism. F zuckerberg

[–] Glunkbor@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Just think of how Facebook has ruined Instagram and has made it basically unusable. Unless you enjoy to get spammed with ads, never see what people you follow post, and get tons of reels that you never cared about in the first place. Never in my life will I ever use or buy anything from Meta and that android Zuckerborg.

[–] Segnis@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Even if I end up hating it, I think overall this is a good thing as it'll help introduce more people to federated social media.

[–] BeardedSingleMalt@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Since I don't have FB, IG nor twitter...nope.

[–] LilBagOfBunnies@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

I never really used Twitter to begin with, minus to follow some news, protests, and a few NBA players. I wouldn't mind Twitter having some competition though so I could drop it entirely!

[–] wickerlark@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

hell nah. i don't trust the zucc with anything he touches

[–] SilverMutant@lemmy.fmhy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Naaah, never.

[–] Melody@lemmy.one 4 points 1 year ago

Hard No.

In fact I'd expect a large number of fediverse instances to defederate or silence the instance so that users who do not want to be bothered by it will not be bothered.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

Nope. Not a chance.

[–] Kurt@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I might set it up, since I already use Instagram, but I'm not sure how much I'll use it.

  • I already have accounts on mastodon.social and jorts.horse, so what's the point for me?
  • I wouldn't be able to post to Threads like I do to Twitter since my family are all on Instagram. They wouldn't get it.

doesn't matter if it uses ActivityPub, it's made by meta, so definitely no

[–] modulartable@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I love the aspect of it being tied to ActivityPub and I do still utilize Instagram primarily as a way to communicate with friends and family, so I'm willing to give it a try. However, I don't think it will replace the love I have for Mastadon or be able to match the aspects of Mastadon that I really enjoy: the positive communities, personalization, no algorithm, etc.

[–] resketreke@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

They would have to pay me handsomely for me to even consider it.

[–] richardazia@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Facebook behaved immorality. It rebranded as Meta, and now they want to trick some, by saying that Instagram is making a Twitter Clone... Facebook was already Twitter's competition, from 2006 onwards.
This is my long-winded way of saying "nope".

[–] marx2k@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I'm banned from Facebook so... probably not

[–] LetterboxPancake@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha, oh god, never. I disliked Twitter, but I hate Meta

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 3 points 1 year ago

Is it weird that, since The Dipshit took over, Twitter leapfrogged Facebook to become my least favourite major social network? Like, Facebook will sell you out to the highest bidder for their evil ends, but Twitter itself was sold out for the same reason.

[–] Gerula@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Wait, so you're saying it's the same like here but with more big corp, data farming, ads, CEOs and lots and lots of profit for them?

Ahhhh, nope not for me, but thanks anyway!

[–] LeifJ@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I just closed the two pipes Meta used to suck my life into their databases (FB and IG) and I am not likely to open a new one.

[–] Bretzel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Absolutely not, I deleted all contents from this trash company and don't want to be part of it anymore

The last thing we need right now would be another centralized social media platform.
