I mean in the beginning of the war it made sense to send even a small amount of money, later if seemed billions were pouring in so...

Today it looks like small donations can actually make the day brighter for the people over there, a small sum might become a a pair of gloves, 6 hours of light and a little warmth, some nicer food, ...

What is the role of the corrugated paper? What happens if standard wicks are used?

The corrugated paper is cheap, has vertical channels on the inside, and its quantity creates a large area flame. Standard wicks would only produce a small flame with little heat.

My guess is to have the flame dispersed over the entire candle so as to make it much more difficult to blow out. Would also make it hotter for use as a field stove or human warmer.
