Where to now? (feddit.nl)
submitted 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) by neidu@feddit.nl to c/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Looks like my favorite torrent-site is shutting down in not too long. It's an invite-only site that I've been using for well over a decade, so I'm a bit at a loss as to where to go. Any suggestions? I mainly use it for tv shows and movies.

I prefer to stay away from public trackers, and I prefer sites that focuses on users who keeps a decent ratio.

Disclaimer: I am of course asking this purely as a hypothetical scenario, as piracy is illegal, and I merely want to know which sites to avoid.

UPDATE: I've gotten a few invites that should serve my needs. Thanks for helping!

Just to iterate: your favorite torrent site, you've been avoiding is shutting down so you need a new one, to avoid enthusiastically

Of course. It is/was my favorite purely based on the design of the front page.

You mean screenshots of the homepage, which you saw posted on a general social media page

these two sites might be able to help out.

i have visited and tried out most interesting websites and added them to my bookmark bar. whenever i can't find something, the next website will probably have it.

the pirate bay isn't listed on these (for good reason) but i have been using it forever, just try to not download game torrents from there. that's where the viruses are at.

in minecraft

Everything said here in this comment is theoretical and in Minecraft.

If they are shutting down but haven't shut down yet check to see if any other sites are doing open signups for refugees on your sites forums. That's how I got elsewhere before baconbits shut down, with it being my only tracker.

The community really is a community and when they know in advance a site is shutting down, they usually get together and put out invites on that sites forums for others to use as an "escape hatch." They will still want to see an account in good standing.

Also, take screenshots of your account info so when the site shuts down you can still use it as proof you had an account in good standing. Many sites still have open sign ups and good past accounts go a long way to being let in. I'm not sure if Lemmy has an open sign ups thread like reddit did.

If you can, try to "diversify" and get on a handful of sites, choosing ones particular to your interests, of course.

Anyway, good luck in avoiding all of that!

I never heard "in minecraft" before, but I like it.

I know your looking for torrents, but have you tried going down the nzb rabbit hole?

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 12 points 9 months ago

i dont have the ketamine required to pivot to nzb

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 9 months ago

soulseek isn't too shabby these days, either.

[–] Kaldo@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Got a guide or some similar resource for someone who might be interested in checking out that rabbit hole?

Found this Google docs PDF that's a pretty good read on it. Keep in mind it's 5yrs old so some of the recommended indexers and services might have gone off line, but the general info is still true.

*Edit, I know I'm breaking the first rule of Usenet!

Just don't break the second ru--- d'oh!

Does quality matter for you? I really like Blutopia for high quality files of movies and TV. Other wise, trackers like TorrentLeech are fine enough for my purposes.

At this point I can't really afford to be picky, so any invite is a welcome one. So I can actively avoid using it, of course.......

I can get you into TSP, maybe somewhere else, need to check where I have invites. Shoot me a DM.

A gentle reminder that you can also do anonymous torrenting in i2p.

Geti2p.net I believe is the site to visit.
