I have Android 7, which doesn't have this feature ... do I need to clear the cache too? If so, does that mean I have to reinstall the app?
If you go into settings->applications->liftoff you should see it in there. Cache clearing has been around as long as I can remember

Settings -> Apps -> LiftOff -> Storage -> clear cache.

Does it clear the cache whenever there's an update or something? Because mine only uses 60MB, an i never cleared it.
Maybe some optimisation by your phone? I've seen phones that suggest regularly cleaning unused files (xiaomi or huawei, not sure).

Yes, but thereβs no way of manually clearing the cache. On iOS the app (if itβs in the App Store) must either manage the cache automatically or allow the user to set a cache size limit.
If it gets out of hand (see Settings/General/iPhone Storage) Youβd need to uninstall the app, restart your phone and re-install.
No idea, I don't have an ios device to check against.

Holy crap I have 13.23 gigs. What is stored in the cache? Do I lose anything when I clear it?
When Liftoff loads a picture or video the file has to be stored somewhere on the device for it to be displayed. All that is stored in the Liftoff cache. You should not loose data by clearing your cache as the cache is suppose to be a temporary storage location.
If you have downloaded things from lemmy via liftoff those files will be unaffected as they are stored elsewhere.

What a dogshit implementation - this is egregious enough that the app should be pulled/banned until this is patched.
Oh calm down. Its still in development. If one minor issue like manual cache clearing is such a big deal, open an issue on the github page or just fork it and fix it yourself. It's a FOSS app still in active development, the unfortunate cost of living on the cutting edge is that sometimes you get shoved face first through a tomato.
My background is as a product manager for a digital platform, not a developer. I'm not the guy to fix this issue, but I'm pretty comfy it's a meaningful issue.
While I applaud the FOSS effort (I wasn't aware), I'm not going to sit on the sidelines clapping as people's faces are shoved through tomatoes. If this is worthy of a regular reminder at risk of filling your phone, it warrants an urgent fix that appears to be taking time.
Here's hoping it gets fixed quickly though.
Genuine question. Is it still in active development? The last release was three months ago, the last commit on GitHub was in August and no posts from the team in two months.
Mate, the official Reddit App used to do the same shit until i think 2019, calm down. Cache clearing is really not that big of a deal
So long as you know to do it as your phone's storage is gobbled up at an alarming rate.
Most of us are here because we think reddit is shit - that's not your best point.
If you want manual cache clearing to be gone, you can always do a pull request on the repo, the app is still in beta, it is not in fact officially finished. Don't expect a work in progress to be a completed product
So if the app fills my phone's storage, and I don't know why because I don't know how to code, and didn't know this was an issue? This doesn't stop the app working properly - it stops your phone working properly pretty quickly.
If it's in beta and affecting people's phone function, maybe that beta needs to be a little tighter than just grabbing the app from the play store without any warning.
Exactly why I mentioned the official Reddit app at first. Also, filling up your cache and not properly clearing it is a common thing that happens across apps. So common that the button for manual clearing is part of the first things you see when opening app details.
If you own a phone which is not considered to be the "standard", chances are high a lot more than just this app is not clearing their cache properly. I own such a non-standard phone, and let me tell you, regularly clearing the cache of Whatsapp, Discord and even Youtube are simply things I do every week.
Why? If someone knows the issue, they can choose they want to use the app anyway, or delete it. If the app is pulled, they donβt really have that option.
This is true - I just hope the app cache is cleared when they uninstall it (though it'd be an OS issue if it didn't.

I know this is the community specifically for the Liftoff app, but thought I'd mention Eternity which I find to be quite a similar experience and has better cache handling - it has a configurable limit and sticks to it. So, if this functionality is important to you, it might be worth trying out an alternative until Liftoff has a solution.
