That kid is gonna be world champion. I’m absolutely enamored with the fact that Oscar won his first race on the day the Max got his 3rd title. That’s a hell of a gauntlet.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago

Piastri is incredibly good. I was skeptical of him coming in, and I was entirely wrong. Kid has proven himself to be able to run up against the best and hold his own. Absolutely amazing talent that very much deserves his seat. Mclaren made some big brain moves to β€œsteal” him from alpine, where tbh his talent would have probably been wasted

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

Just Ocon things

[–] joat_mon@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

Its been a tough few years as a McLaren fan but finally back at the top. So glad to have Piastri on board. Really hope Lando stays with the team.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Piastri getting his first win before Lando, even being a sprint is a little rough.

Lando win tomorrow?

[–] FrostyTrichs@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Lando win tomorrow?

Unlikely from P10 but there's genuine pace in the car from both drivers. It will be exciting depending on what happens with tires.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I could see tyres and safety cars mixing the up the order pretty significantly tomorrow. In all reality it’ll probably be a verstappen win, but one can hope

[–] FrostyTrichs@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Max starting well ahead of the only cars that are likely to match him on pace probably means an easy win without intervention from a safety car or something.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

Alpine missing a tyre, but RB is missing a huge chunk of its sidepod.

Looks like Ocon just ran across Hulk and took out an innocent Perez

[–] Brekky@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

That was a satisfying sprint, with all the position changes right up to the last lap.

[–] LittleWizard@feddit.de 6 points 11 months ago

I somehow really feel for Lando. So consistent and loyal to the team. Number 1 driver at McLaren for a long time. And both of the last wins aren't his. A great future for Oscar though.

[–] justsomeguy@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

What a shitshow. Can't wait to see what the ratio of safety car laps to racing laps ends up being.

Verstappen is real life Ricky Bobby. Has the WDC sealed up but wants to win a fucking sprint race just to win.

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

And there's Max championship (provided he doesn't drop out).

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I could totally see them retiring Max so he can win the title tomorrow instead of after a sprint

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They're saying he doesn't even need to complete the Sprint. He's won the championship by Perez retirement.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

F

Gotta be the most anti-climactic championship win for a very anti-climactic season of Max dominance

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 6 points 11 months ago

Verstappen aside it's the closest season in ages.

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Max has been ultra dominant, but the rest of the drivers have had some excellent racing. Perez starting off strong, Alonso's podium streak, Hamilton slowly creeping up to 3rd, George's excellent but unfruitful pushes, Sainz's Singapore win, the recent McLaren upturn.

[–] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

He didn’t even sound excited on the post flag radio messages lol it was the most bored β€œthanks for all you do” message ever and I’ve heard plenty being corporate IT

[–] June@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Who did it? Checo or Esteban?

Edit: well, at least it wasn’t Checo for a change.

[–] JCPhoenix@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

Def looks more like Ocon to blame to me. Checo kinda happened to be collateral damage. Damn.

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Wow those soft tyres just came apart immediately.

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 2 points 11 months ago

Well, that was a fun start.

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Let's hope Oscar can get a sprint win, would be pretty nice.

[–] bwoah@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Just fire Perez. This is beyond embarrassing

Edit: nevermind not his fault, but still. he should have been much higher

[–] TheBlue22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

YOU ARE KIDDING ME PEREZ. They gotta red flag this, otherwise its safety car till the end

EDIT: nevermind, I think it's mostly ocons or hulks fault

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 3 points 11 months ago

Ocon I'd argue, he cut across Hulkenberg, hit Hulk's front left and got launched into Perez.

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Nah, that would allow easy tire changes, by far the most ridiculous part of red flags.

[–] TheBlue22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 months ago

Russell just sent it holy moly

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Max seems to be having a lovely sprint so far.

On a side note, direction seems to be pretty erratic, almost missing all the important stuff at the front.

Edit: come on Sergio, what the hell are you doing?

[–] genuineparts@feddit.de 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

For once he had absolutely no fault.

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

He definitely wasn't at fault, but in my uneducated opinion he should have avoided being at such a position. If the championship was closer I would agree with the move. But he should just try to play it safe and consolidate his second position in the wdc. Incidents like this cost money in repairs, decrease his standing with the team and gave free points to his biggest rival.

[–] genuineparts@feddit.de 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Well, on one hand that is certainly true, on the other he probably just wants to prove himself. And from the replay it didn't look like he even touched Hulkenberg but he just got bowled by Ocon. So as much as I agree with your point, that was just really bad luck.

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

For sure bad luck. Though if he got information that the softs were going off he should have reconsidered that move, imho. If he wants to stay with Red Bull he just needs to bring in points and not crash.

[–] genuineparts@feddit.de 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Absolutely. However I think the RB ship for Checo has sailed, I know they say he has a contract. But I would not bet on him driving for RB in 24.

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Even in that case it doesn't make sense, imho again, either he needs to show smart racing if he wants to go elsewhere. Or he again needs to maintain second if ge wants to quit. We can all say he had no chance this year but second in the stats is still second.

[–] BURN@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Direction is awful. We’re seeing so many replays and nothing of the actual racing

[–] DV8@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Just from body language alone I hate the guy grabbing Oscar by the neck. Is that Domenicali? Regardless of who he ys, he seems like a sleazeball.

[–] TheBlue22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 months ago

Here goes Seargant again

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

GG congrats Max. Beast of a season, and there's still one race and 5 weekends to go.

For once, Perez not responsible for the crash.

[–] Gsicht@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

How slow are these recovery crews?

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Oof man, can't remember the last time Sargeant had a clean race.

[–] fiah@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 11 months ago

excited to see if we get a maiden "win" for either of the McLarens

[–] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Oof shoddy start for Lando. Russell got a terrific jump.

Sucks for Lawson.

[–] justsomeguy@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Medium strategy showing its strength all of a sudden.

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Interesting how Hulkenburg barely made it out of the clinch and was the only one able to drive further.

[–] hagelslager@feddit.nl 1 points 11 months ago

Well, apparently to the pits.
