Troll and Toad has been one of the biggest and longest running gaming stores selling MTG. Sadly they're going to stop selling all Magic singles and sealed product (!) as of January 1, 2024.

The reasons they cite are that:

  • MTG is less profitable now vs other games
  • Reserved list reprints in 30A "spooked" them
  • The "constant reprinting of valuable cards and the number of variants of these cards made buylist pricing difficult and sometimes resulted in buying cards at a loss."

"Magic is not profitable enough for our company to continue carrying right now," said Burns to ICv2. "Sometimes it felt like I was only stocking Magic product because I loved the game so much."

Despite their reputation I've bought many cards from them off and on since the late 90s and have had good interactions, really sad to see them stop. Doesn't seem great for the game either, particularly considering they only dropping MTG and no other TCGs/games.

This is terrible news for the game. The reasons they list are extremely difficult to overcome without an about-face from wizards with how they treat game stores and their product releases.

They are the store I've heard the most bad stories about. So, fine. Still good stores out there.
