But they won't. Why would they?

[–] ErikDegenerik@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Well they actually did. This is from leaked Google store pages for the new Pixels.

Because doing so is, to people who run businesses, throwing money in the dumpster

[–] Voytrekk@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Google has one advantage over other Android device makers. They make profit off of the Play Store at a much higher rate than they do from hardware sales. If this change brings more people over from iOS to Android, it will be an overall win for them.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago

Google makes money from providing service and advertising. It has more to gain from supported devices than without.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Because they don't have a monopolistic position in this market yet.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 2 points 1 year ago

Because they can say they will, possibly sell slightly more than they predicted. And then in 2 years say that they cannot support it anymore anyway.

Something went wrong. Please disable your blocker on AndroidPolice

It looks like your blocker is attempting to interfere with the intended operation of this site. Support our writers and our copyrighted content by allowing our site to function as we intended. Please disable your blocker and add us to your allowlist.

No, i don't think i will. How bout i just leave your site instead?

[–] Polar@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Ya, how dare a website gets revenue to pay their writers and server host.

[–] verysoft@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

They could show you where the ads will be placed and display a non-intrusive message saying please whitelist this site, then I would consider it.
If they aggressively ask me to turn off my adblocker with pops up and such, then I am just going to leave the site or block the popups. Sites push the most cancer ads and are then surprised when people want nothing to do with them.

[–] Polar@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Okay, and when you wonder why websites shut down, it's because people like you.

Leaving the site is fine. Blocking their pop-up is just stealing their bandwidth.

You're the reason many websites have become pay per view, which then I'm sure you bitch about. Nothing in life is free. Either you pay to access, or you view ads.

It's actually sad that you're upset that a website is asking you to disable Adblock so they can continue to fund their website, and provide you with free content.

it gives you the option to continue without disabling lol

[–] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, i did not see that. Oopse

[–] T3rr4T3rr0r@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah I don't notice a lot of the time with these websites too. They're really good at hiding the option to continue without disabling ads

[–] nelov@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Got the same on Vivaldi(mobile), then I opened the URL in Firefox(mobile), and I guess thanks to uBlock origin, I was able to read the whole article.

[–] shortwavesurfer@monero.town 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I used firefox to open it, but i have a DNS level adblock in place.

[–] PeachMan@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Ah yes, DNS adblocking has its uses, but it's a lot less versatile than an adblocker in your browser. Your point is valid, though. If the website is going to fight your adblocker, maybe just don't go to that website.

[–] olizet@lemmy.works 13 points 1 year ago (3 children)

So which Pixel hardware survived seven years in the past? πŸ€”

[–] loki@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

Still have the OG Pixel XL for unlimited image/video backup. Released in 2016. battery doesn't last long, a little burn in but still works well with Android 10.

[–] GenderNeutralBro@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Without replaceable batteries, there's no way I'm holding onto a phone for that long.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

The batteries are replaceable. Just not user-replaceable and therefore a bit more expensive. Typically $80-100 a pop for Pixels.

[–] AnyProgressIsGood@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Beemoe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

How on earth did you not have that bullshit battery disconnect issue.

I had three of them, after a certain period of time it would always show 50% battery and not charge. Just death.

They eventually upgraded me to a 5a, that I've had for a few years but I'm astonished that anyone still has a pixel 2.

[–] rgb3x3@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

For the rumored extra $200 price tag, it's disappointing that they aren't including the better gorilla glass Victus 2, Qi2 charging, UWB, and UFS 4.0 on the Pixel 8.

At least include the more durable glass, Qi2, and UWB. This is going to make the phone pretty out of date just by the spring. Especially because of the tendency for Pixels to get much worse over time.

I'm a forever Android fan, but I'm getting jealous of the quality and consistency of iPhones. I just wish I could find that kind of hardware quality in something other than Samsung (because I can't stand their software).

[–] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I have the Pixel 6 Pro. It will be the last Google product I purchase. It felt out dated at release and it’s been plagued with so many β€œ6o’clock news” issues if it were an iPhone. Not being able to call 911 was a deal breaker.

[–] verysoft@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Aye, it's overpriced. Pixel prices usually drop pretty fast though.

[–] kras@fanaticus.social 8 points 1 year ago

I totally trust them this time...

[–] IzzyData@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are they really starting to put 1tb of storage in phones? I still see phones with 64gb on the market. πŸ˜”

[–] PeachMan@lemmy.one 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Flash storage has gotten dirt cheap. 64GB is just insulting. Hell, I wouldn't even accept 128GB nowadays, it probably only costs manufacturers a few dollars to double that. But of course they upcharge us $100.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Sure, but my IT brain says β€œthe more data, the more you have to back up.” Which adds up quickly when you’re doing 3-2-1 backups and GFS backups and such.

[–] Fermiverse@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

While on an fairphone where a "normal" user can change various parts himself it makes sense, how does this workout on a pixel or any other "not for selfrepair" built device?

A screen module of the fairphone is 70€, so you drop it and change the screen yourself. Continuing to use it.

More than 4/5 years updates with batteries dying due to fast/ultra charged cycles doesn't make sense in my point of view.

They will for sure require original parts installed in the manufacturer repair shop.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 7 points 1 year ago

7 years of security updates alongside feature drops, which hopefully translate into 7 years of OS upgrades, would be great. The hardware may not be as repairable as the fairphone, but I guess something is better than nothing.

[–] uralsolo@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

I mean they could, but they won't.

[–] chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I have a Pixel 6 and after 1 year the battery is terrible. I intend to move to Pixel 8 because of longer updates and Desktop Mode. Unfortunately they don't have removable batteries yet.

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Really? With average usage, my 6a ends the day at 70%+

Maybe you got a lot of crap running

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

My 6 Pro's battery is nearly as good as new after 2 years.

[–] chemicalwonka@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

No, I am already using GrapheneOS and all apps that I am not using are disabled.

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

That's odd cuz I'm also using GrapheneOS. Pixel 7 should have a better battery then my 6a

[–] tankplanker@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If they would just offer an official replacement service like Apple does for the iPhone then this could be my next phone. Sure its expensive (around Β£85 for an iPhone 12 Pro), and sure it is often easier to get some random 3rd party shop to replace your battery but I would rather pay more for less risk with the replacement.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They do have authorized repair services at least in Canada and the US. Battery replacement with a genuine part is $80-100.

[–] yoz@aussie.zone 2 points 1 year ago

Don't, you don't need a new phone as phones have reached peak performance. I would suggest you to try installing graphene OS or any other custom roms from XDA. If you dont know how then ask someone who's tech savvy and they will make your old phone, a brand new phone.

[–] NightOwl@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

I'd love to see that happen. At the very least security updates. It's a shame when a device stops getting updates rendering it an insecure device despite the hardware still being capable of quality performance. Especially with phones costing more than laptops.

[–] xerazal@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago

Man and I just bought a new phone like 2 months ago.. I would have much preferred this for the longevity
