Unfortunately, many people with Native ancestry here are “land rich, money poor,” which is what speculators are banking on. Fortunately a lot of them are on the more north side of the island, which didn’t burn. But it’s bad, and Maui was rapidly turning into Oahu even before the fire.

Why nevermind? It's a very real thing, Naomi Klein wrote a fantastic book on the subject. I'd recommend it
