TL;DR 1.5 m cable, instead of 1 m. Color-matched and braided.

It really comes down to the way you use it. As others have mentioned you don’t even need one to get the job done. And it’s true that beyond a certain length it’s sort of impractical; mostly just for show.

In all seriousness, being that they’re using standard C ends, I’m a little surprised they’re going to include one at all.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

They’re probably going to need to include it during the transition period. Not everyone is flush with C charging cables if they’re been in lighting land and don’t have a Mac or a newer Windows machine.

... I don't know what you mean that beyond a certain length it's impractical. I keep 6-10ft USB C cables everywhere. I view 3 feet as the minimum useful length to me, at least because honestly much shorter than I don't even have a place to rest my phone while it charges. I was looking at even getting a 15-20 foot cable for my living room since all my outlets are kinda far from the couch.

It was a dick joke

I hope the new braided cables don't break as easily as the current non-braided ones.

Not sure what kind of insulation they use in their cables. It sure feels nice and rubbery, but they seem to be calling apart regardless of how you use it after a few years because the insulation got brittle over time. Are they using natural rubber it something? I live in the tropics so the abundance of UV makes rubber products fall apart faster here. Hopefully braided cables last longer.

The cable for my M2 MBA is braided and the quality feels equal to my braided Anker usb-c cables and I’ve had those for the better part of a decade without any issues. So I’d imagine if these are infact the new iPhone cables they should probably be good too.

I guess I'm one of the few people who prefers wireless charging. I haven't used a cable in my phone for years

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I like mag safe at time, but USB C charging is faster, less hot, not as bulky in the hand, and requires less outlets if everything in your home is using the same port, etc.

[–] lud@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

It's also wasteful if that is something you care about.

[–] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess I don't need to use my phone when it's charging as much as most people, or maybe just don't use my phone as much period

My iPhone 12 battery is kind of trash now, so using the phone plugged-in is common now.

When my battery was fresh, I would make it to the evening, plop it down, and be done. Now I need to charge once or twice in the middle of the day, and I usually notice that I need to charge while I’m using the device.

[–] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

My 11 still has 73% capacity, but since it's almost always charging I never notice that it needs it. I just keep it on the charger when I'm not using it. (Which, apparently, is a lot more often than most people.)

Personally, wireless isn’t fast enough about half the time and current high-power charging can charge even iPhones up extremely fast to the point I’d rather plug in for 20 minutes then sit my phone on the Qi charger for an hour. However, that would change if wireless charging technology caught up.

[–] MtDewaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

You may want to consider replacing your phone battery if it isn’t lasting all day. I just set my phone on a Qi charger at night and I never have to plug my phone in during the day. Maybe I just don’t use my phone that much though, idk

[–] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Jesus an hour? That just sounds like they're using shitty wireless charging tech. Four year old OnePlus phones out here getting 50% wireless charge in 10 minutes.

[–] dandroid@dandroid.app 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't like that in order to use my phone while it's charging on a wireless charger, I need to pick up the whole wireless charger, wire and all, and then it kind of defeats the purpose.

I think it doesn't work well for people who need to have their phones in their hands at all times (me).

[–] RoseRose56@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Maybe? Maybe? In which year are we living ? Can't apple make a long enough cable for people to use? No they can't because people have to pay extra $$$$$$$$ to get a bigger cable. They don't care if you have to sit next to wall to charge and use the phone.

[–] rippersnapper@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

That's a lot of speculation for a single cable

[–] IWantToFuckSpez@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For the price you pay for the iPhone it should include a 10m cord on a reel. Nice that it’s finally braided though. Never had a Apple charging cable that wouldn’t deteriorate.

[–] dan@lemm.ee -2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You can bet your left nut that braiding will do precisely zero for durability. No way they want to eat into their cable profits.

[–] Windows_95@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’ve never had an apple cable fail after 10+ years of owning their devices. People who destroy their cables are irresponsible, simple as

[–] IWantToFuckSpez@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Lol it doesn’t matter whether I was irresponsible or not with my cables, who the fuck babies their cables anyway, for the price you pay for the iPhone those cables should be durable as hell. Even IKEA cables sells cheap cables that are braided and never break.

[–] Windows_95@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don’t baby my cables I just take care of the things I buy. If you’re not capable of the same then the problem lies with you not the cable

[–] IWantToFuckSpez@kbin.social -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lol yes it’s my fault that the plastic just deteriorates out of nowhere. And not because Apple uses shit material. All my other cables never break or fall apart. Apple cables are the only cables that do that.

[–] iCarlosPro@mastodon.online 0 points 1 year ago

@IWantToFuckSpez @octalfudge @dan @Windows_95 you know, Apple cables external part biodegrades over time. It’s on purpose, so they don’t stay as waste for hundreds of years. The best thing you can do to keep them from starting biodegradation is to not exposing them to direct sunlight too much. That and storing them properly. They are braiding them now because the braiding can be recycled, and the plastic part won’t biodegrade until they recycle them.

[–] dan@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I don’t break very many cables myself, but I’ve certainly broken a couple of Apple cables - they seem particularly delicate.

All it takes is picking up your phone without realising it’s still on charge and getting unlucky with force/angle. That won’t destroy it but it’ll damage the interface between the cable and the plug enough that it’ll start to deteriorate and eventually come apart.

[–] Pechente@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The magsafe cables are braided and they’re nice. Maybe someone else can chime in if they actually last longer as I‘m rarey using mine, so it being prestine is not a surprise in my case.

[–] dan@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah I’ve got one too. They’re certainly nicer, but the thing that worries me is while the braided cable is a little more durable they’ve taken away the strain relief.

(That said these usb-c ones look like they have strain relief, so maybe?)

[–] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That cable in the pic looks identical to the one I got in my MacBook Air box a few weeks back. Hope this is true but you can see in the photo it's clearly a) longer than 1.5m and b) too big for an iPhone box.

[–] Jackolantern@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Are these still included in the box though?
