On Organic Maps and surely Osmand as well, you can add additional waypoints to your route to force a specific one. That's the way I do it

I also don't understand why I can't be shown 2-3 options, it's incredibly convenient. Manually adding waypoints, or manually telling it to avoid roads, isn't and it's also not the same thing. On Google I see whole alternative routes, in osmand I only see an adapted route when I make a change (waypoint/avoid), but I still only see that one route now. I no longer see the old one to compare, and switching back is cumbersome.
I don't really understand why a few options aren't shown as a default, maybe with slightly certain criteria if possible for a particular a to B. Like one avoiding highways, or hills, or just smaller roads. Maybe a shortest and a quickest, maybe one with fewest lights. If that's not possible, just show some comparable options with similar travel time? Would really improve the experience a lot.
exactly! It shouldn't be too difficult to implement in my opinion, but it would be very very useful
Because the processing is done on your phone, not by servers with enormous quantities of map data stores in RAM in the cloud.
but google maps also works offline, does it store the routes in memory? is it more convenient than calculating the route locally?
We're talking about servers storing tens or hundreds of gigabytes of map data in RAM. Your phone doesn't even have that capability. That's why calculating a route on OSM is slow and Google is fast
I think in OsmAnd at least you can also ignore specific roads for navigation
Unfortunately, there isn't any FOSS project that specifically does that.
If you want to stick with FOSS you have to settle with OsmAnd or Organic Maps and force specific routes with waypoints.
If you want the possibility to choose between more than one route right after searching, a good OSM-based navigator is Magic Earth, it has nice features (like crowd-sourced traffic indications) and while not FOSS it has a good privacy policy compared to other apps.
A privacy policy isn't the same thing as the Four Freedoms. !privacy@lemmy.ml is next door, this is !opensource@lemmy.ml.
*Heavy sigh*
huh, I had no idea that being pro-FOSS in a FOSS community was that controversial. I guess this place really is turning into the new reddit.
People downvoted you because you deliberately chose ti ignore the first half of my answer to play the "indignated FSF extremist" when it was absolutely unnecessary. Not because people don't value FOSS and its community.
And stop playing the victimized main character because no one is buying that bs. Because THAT is something a dumb reddit user would do
indignated FSF extremist
It's not like this is a generic unrelated lemmy community, it's literally called "open source" (with a rule specifically saying "Posts must be relevant to the open source ideology" in the sidebar). there are a million other spaces where proprietary garbage can be promoted, I don't go around those places chewing people out for doing so. You chose to come into a space called "open source" to trash open source and promote a proprietary application, the fact that you are getting upvoted for doing so is just sad imho.
Anyway, you don't seem to have anything other than childish personal attacks in response so this is where I disengage from this thread.
I don't think there are, but in OsmAnd you can tell the app to avoid certain roads. It's not really what you're looking for, but I think that this is the closest you will get (for now).
Keep in mind google / Apple are aggregating thousands of data points from other user locations, so they have a bit more real-time info with which to show you alternate routes.
I haven’t used FOSS tools but def agree a toll / no toll / no freeway / shortest (mileage) / quickest route options would be handy.
